Not everybody hunts that way.

Yesterday I had to lay the rifle on the top wire of my barb wire fence to shoot as many hogs as possible. Once the sounder hit the woods, I had to follow. Laid the rifle on the ground, and slid myself, on my back under the bottom wire. Off into the creek bottom I went. Never gave one though that I was going to scratch the rifle or the scope, those are battle scars as far as I'm concerned.

Buzz, how much you want for it? That sounds like a fine rifle to put to work.

Oddly enough, the gun I'm probably the hardest on, and treat the worst is a wood stocked .44 mag carbine that I use tracking in heavy brush. Going into a yaupon and greenbrier thicket on your hands and knees can put some dings on one.

It's not "fancy" but it is the nicest gun i have. It's a Mossberg 500 20g with wood furniture. I had it out walking in the woods Friday, never thought twice about it, MAYBE one day I'll purchase a gun to look at but i don't see much since in spending money on something I'm scared scratching up if i use it.

Yep, 80% of my trophy animals were killed spot and stalk hunting. The scratches are part of the memory.

That's the truth. I can't stand sitting in a box blind. Bores the heck out of me. The closest I come to that now is a climbing treestand. Most of the time though, I'm on my feet.

You must be shopping in different gun stores than me. The best I can find are nice wood stocks without breasts.

Wood is a natural resource. I sell very few "plastic" calls and that includes acrylic, cast resins, molded "stuff". A person will grab the wood call and admire the grain, the natural beauty of the wood. It doesn't even have to be a call, it could be wood bowl compared to a plastic bowl. If you want to see some beautiful wood stocks, look some at the old muzzleloaders that are hand carved, have silver wire inlays and have a hand rubbed finish on them. Some of these date back to pre Revolutionary War and all the way to the modern day gunsmiths. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun...

Can you do this with "plastic"?

My wood stocks go into the woods all of the time, the ones I pictured came from the ALR forum, these people hunt with their guns, they don't just sit there and look pretty. I don't abuse my "tools" but they get used.

Go to a gun store, watch the people as they pick up a wood stocked gun, most will admire the wood and run their hand over the wood. Those that pick out the plastic, they don't run their hand up and down the "plastic".

Do you buy a plain jane beater pickup to drive in the woods? Or do you prefer a nice pickup, even knowing you are going to get scratches on it?

To each their own.

I'm go, before show. Bullets exactly where they are supposed to go, every time, in all weather, is my top priority.

I can appreciate the artistry in a fine crafted wood stock but I, like many others, don't "use" them.

My do everything, go everywhere 12ga is synthetic... the 870 20ga from my dad and my 16ga from my Grandpa will stay wood.

My rifles are a mix, I just put a very nice piece of walnut onto my .338wm elk rifle and my 7RUM wears an McM Edge Game Scout.

I think F&S had a great quote not to long ago about the character of a wood stock telling a story when you pass it down...

When you think about it, firearms can be viewed in much the same way as vehicles. There are those that you might consider as "utility" that you drive every day, and others that you take out of the garage and drive far less frequently. And like a vehicle, some might think of a special firearm as something they want to leave for loved ones to enjoy after they're gone.

I think it's worth noting too that a firearm doesn't have to be taken to the field to bring pleasure to its owner. Just being in possession of a firearm that carries a longstanding family legacy can be extremely rewarding. That's how I feel about a couple of firearms that once belonged to my grandfather. He had stopped hunting years before I reached an age where I could have hunted with him, so they carry the only legacy I have of him as being an outdoorsman. For that reason, they very seldom leave the safe.

Actually I forgot to mention that both of the pictures are of muzzleloaders that were built by the owners. Some build one in a few months, others take a lot longer. Most are close replicas of the period of the American Revolution. Even the silver inlay and carvings are from the time period.

I have both types. My old Sako has pretty wood. It's over 40 years old. Probably killed 25-30 deer with it plus some other stuff. If my life depended on making one shot, it's the one I would use. It has a nick here and there but still looks good.

Hold on....only my custom and my ARs do not have wood stocks....I love wood stocks and the beauty of them. I'm talking about the ornate carving etc on stocks that I've seen that helps run up the price of the rifle. The black stocks that come on most rifles, bolt actions, I will not give a second thought of purchasing. They simply do not feel right in my hands and they are but ugly! So I LOVE walnut stocks! But I'm not going to pay extra for one that has beautiful carving on it...I can and do appreciate the beauty but paying more for it just ain't my cup of tea.

I have around 30 hunting rifles all of which have wood stocks (late dad and grandfather's guns) with only one of them being newer than 15 years old.

Nearly all of those rifles look like they did the day they were bought and they'll continue looking that way as long as I own them. I take care of those guns and I hope my three kids do the same when they own them one day.

I have had fancy wood rifles until my last one. 25-06 with synthetic stock, only because I got a good deal on it. All them rifles killed though. Have to be careful with any gun too.

I personally do not own any rifle that will sit in a safe and just get stared at or handled occasionally, which is why I've gotten rid of all my nice old Sako's, Steyr's, etc. Rifles are just tools to me and nothing else, as they are far from my identity.

We had an aoudad hunter a few years ago show up with a $7500 Blaser with an S&B on top. He loved showing it off, as it was a beautiful piece of work. After the hunt was over (near Post, TX) his rifle looked like a pit bull had gotten a hold of it.
