 Working with canvas micarta - suggestions?

Hey guys - first post for me in the knife forum. I'm working on a few knives that are being produced via CNC and am looking to prototype a few canvas micarta scales as well as a spacer.
The spacer I think i can handle but have not worked with micarta before. I'm wondering what is the best way to rough-cut it and what you recommend as far as sanding, drilling & finishing. I want to end up with a rough feel but obviously not the edges. Not looking for a step-by-step as I've watched the usual bevy of YouTube videos just curious about any tips or gotchas.

I use a band saw to cut, it cuts like hard wood. Shape on belt grinder, and route the edges, sands easy. Micarta, G-10 work a lot like any other handle material.

Just make sure and wear a respirator or a good dust mask. You don't want that stuff in your lungs.

So what makes it "micarta"? Isn't' it just a bunch of layers of paper or canvas glue laminated together?

I believe that Micarta is the brand name of the laminated product. Not sure if its protected via patent or just ubiquitous like "Coke" for all kinds of soda...

Micarta is a brand name for composites of linen, canvas, paper, fiberglass, carbon fiber or other fabric in a thermosetting plastic. It was originally used in electrical and decorative applications. Micarta was developed by George Westinghouse at least as early as 1910 using phenolic resins invented by Leo Baekeland.
