Guys,
I own a Browning BBR 7Mag built in 1978 and a 300 Mag built in 1985. Both of these rifles shoot outstanding! But since my neck has gotten bad I just can't/won't shoot them anymore. It's not that I can't take the recoil for 5-6 rounds it's that afterward and for the next two days I hurt pretty good.
I've thought about having a muzzle brake on them. I just haven't wanted to alter them. I realize the only real value is sentimental but it's been enough to keep me from doing it. I have other rifles so I don't HAVE to shoot or hunt with them but I've been kinda getting the itch to shoot them again.
So here's the question...neither has a recoil pad...so if I had a good recoil pad and a muzzle break put on each rifle how much would it reduce the felt recoil?
Thanks,
|

Limbsaver pads are excellent. I have one on my 7mag. It used to beat me up pretty good if I shot it more than a few times. It's a pussycat now.

Put on a limbsaver and shoot it. If you need more help, you can add a brake.

I have M70 7mag in the original stock, I took out the styrofoam in the stock and put fiberglass and ball bearings in for weight. I then stiffened the forend, glass bedded it and put a limbsaver on it. My DIY tamed it way down, my 14 yr old 110lb son shoots it well with no soreness.
On the other hand I currently have APR building me a 300win mag with a muzzle brake so we'll see how that goes.

I am not a fan of brakes for a lot of reasons. Mainly because they're ugly and loud. I especially never like the idea of adding a brake to a traditional rifle. A lot of people feel the same way. It will significantly lower the value of those rifles.
However, if you love those rifles and cannot shoot them without brakes - they may be your only option.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

On my APR 300wm I'm having the barrel threaded and for me a temporary brake until my suppressor comes in. Me personally I don't care for brakes as they are too loud for my tastes, but...

I have only one heavy rifle, a 300 win mag, weighs 12 pounds loaded with scope. I don't really like brakes because they are so loud, but I do however have a brake on it, a Little Bastard Gen II. I have shot 50 rounds through it before with no ill effects as far as my shoulder. Recoil feels equal or less than my 7mm08 that weighs 7 pounds. Just food for thought.

I absolutely hate muzzle brakes so I won't own a gun with one. I would start with a good recoil pad. Recoil pads aren't just hunks of rubber on the butt stock anymore, they have really advanced over the years. Two very good ones that come to mind are Sims Limbsaver and Remington Supercell, but I know there are more out there. I would almost bet if you get a good recoil pad your problem will go away.

H/L muffs and get a break, you'll be able to shoot better and stay on target after the shot. Hopefully one day they will cut the red tape around getting a suppressor and your barrel will already be threaded.

If no sentimental value, sell and buy a rifle in the 308 family cartridge.
You gain very little for most practical hunting.

Have a brake on a 300 short mag featherweight and I love it. Before, it would much the dog out of you.

"Muzzle brakes are loud."
Yeah, well so are rifles without them. And those require hearing protection, anyway. Might as well have the reduced recoil that comes with the brake. Only way to cut a little bit of recoil, and not have loud anymore is suppressor. But they don't reduce recoil as much as a brake does.
Today, I had a 6 Rem A.I, a 6.5 Creedmoor, and my 6.5 Creedmoor. Every rifle wore a brake. A total of 250 rounds were fired. I wore electronic ear muffs all day, and my ears are fine.

I have a Knox Blackhawk stock on my 300 wsm. It reduces the recoil leval to a 270 level. It's a houge stock with a recoil device installed.

A brake on those particular rifles will immediately reduce their value significantly, if you can sell them at all. Older traditional rifles with brakes installed sit on gun show tables a long time.

I would not blink on getting a muzzle brake, who cares what other people think. You need to reduce recoil IMO.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

Many eons ago I got a muzzle brake on my Sako in 270. Yea, it's loud but the deer/hog in the crosshairs never knew the difference. Recoil is less than a 243 for me. Maybe it reduced the value, but it's staying in the family. It was done by Kleinguenther's in Seguin, so it's a quality brake and actually looks pretty good IMO.

I would sell them and buy something you enjoy shooting.
I sold my 7mm mag years ago and have never missed it since.

That is not correct. Depending on design, size, and number of baffles, some sure do reduce recoil. Mine does. Go figure.... I've got a Thunderbeast and a YHM, and neither one of those make a bit of difference in recoil. I'd still rather have a can than a brake for any of my hunting guns, no questions asked.
