Man! All of those are gorgeous rifles! It's giving me an inferiority complex, one that can only be cured by dropping a big chunk of change on some blued steel and walnut!

This is what the rifle looked like when it was new. I think it looks better now. It has a sweat stained wrist, a few scars from hunting trips, some worn bluing, etc...

Here's a fancy wood hunting rifle that has one heck of a hunting history.

If I didn't already have a 6.5x55 it wouldn't have lasted this long. smile

Thanks for the kind words on the Biesen. I'm very proud to have it for sure.

mine is nowhere near that fancy, but I have a Browning Xbolt in 270 with a wood stock and its been my main hunting rifle the last 4 years. Its scratch and has one gouge, but its a rifle and it still shoots straight and true.

I have a beautiful Browning A-bolt Medallion, which has worn a sleeve to protect the stock since day one.

Have used this one for 25 years and just last year had erniejs made a custom sling for my son's 10th birthday. It has now been passed on to its 3rd generation.

That's a cool looking stock. What type of wood is that?

Not sure, my dad bought it from a lady. It was a custom job given to her by her ex. I believe she said white walnut.

Maple or perhaps myrtle?

Here is a maple stock for comparison:

I saw a guy at a hunting show that made custom stocks from mesquite. They were beautiful. He said that they were much harder, tougher, and more stable than walnut. It's also supposed to be much more difficult to work with, so stocks are expensive. I always thought it would be cool to have a rifle stock made from Texas mesquite.

Not that hard to work with, it works a lot easier than maple and most muzzleloaders are stocked with maple. The problem is finding pieces with the grain that will work on a gunstock. Mesquites grow the grain in every direction except straight. I have only made one stock out of mesquite, and it was a 2 piece stock for a small 22 rifle. I have also made hundreds if not thousands of calls out of mesquite, and just using the mesquite wood in a call adds more value.

I have a custom built prewar oberndorf with really nice wood no fancy engraving but pretty wood. I can't hunt with it because I don't want to mess it up. It's the only one I have for that exact reason. I love they way they look but I can't bring myself to mess up good wood.

Got a nice custom wood stocked rifle in 300 win mag rifle. Rarely use it. I prefer my metal ones

Since I only own wood stocked rifles, it's an easy option for me. I have a couple of pre-64 Winchesters, a couple of Ruger #1's and several Pre Remington Marlins that I rotate yearly to hunt whitetais/exotics on my ranch. No black/plastic rifles o pistols will ever see the inside of my safe.

I have some nice wood stocks but to me the fancier it is the more it should be hunted with. You get fancy to show off right, well how many people are looking in your gun safe? Go kill a critter and take a pic with the gun and then you can show it off to the world. Nothing I own stays new or pretty long no matter how much it cost or how pretty it is. Trucks, guns, bows, knives, are all just tools to do a job and I beat the hell out of them to do that job. They are functional but not much to look at for long.

My crappy phone photos do not do it justice.

No way I could hunt with a gun like that.

I have some pretty good looking stocks on rifles and hunt with them. Admittedly the nest looking ones are treated a little better than the synthetic stocked rifles but to me there is smothering about fine wood and blued steel that just goes together and makes the hunt more enjoyable for some reason.

In the military they train you to think of your weapon as a woman. So weapons must be like women, why would anyone want to sleep with an ugly woman, or want to hunt with an ugly gun. clap
