I have a Photon XT which I've never even taken to the blind. I guess it never really inspired me, but I really can't say. But I do understand the pitfalls of NV and the beauty of IR. In fact, I got to play with some very sophisticated IR stuff while in the Navy all the way back into the late 70s. It was a TI system retrofitted to the P-3Cs (a mainstay in airborne anti-submarine warfare, for those not familiar).

Anyway, in my searches and researches (didn't do it right the first time) I ran across a reflex-style thermal sight being offered by Sig:



I thought about just using this on my AR, but I had doubts about using it at longer ranges...BUT, it occurred to me that this thing would probably be more than awesome on a scattergun. Has anyone tried this out?

My buddy had one of those sig thermals and wound up selling it. He said the resolution was pretty weak and because it sits open like it does, it casts light back on the shooter and critters spot you. He said several pigs busted him that way.

I used one for a bunch of hunts as it was inexpensive and could handle the recoil of a .50 Beowulf. It worked well enough. It is a lower resolution scope, but had a better image than my FLIR PS32 spotting scope despite having a physical lower resolution. The difference has to do with the display, I believe. Anyway, it did everything it was supposed to do, but the backlighting was a real pain.

Also, given my older eyes, I had to place it out on my handguard in order to see it clearly without glasses.
