The AR thread made me wonder how many folks take their fancy wood rifles hunting? I have one, but I never take it. It is more like a work of art I enjoy, but when it is time to hunt, the stainless steel and synthetic goes to the field.

This carving by Sterling Davenport really caught my eye.

My crappy phone photos do not do it justice.

I don't own any guns that don't go into the field. And only own one "pretty" wood stocked long gun that comes to mind.

I actually like the look and feel of a wood stock, but I don't have any that are fancy or expensive. I have a Remington 788 with a plain wood stock, a Remington 700 with a laminated wood stock, and a Marlin 30-30 with a basic wood stock. the two main "deer rifles" I use both have synthetic stocks. I also have a Beretta shotgun with a wood stock but I'm about to sell it because I replaced it with a Benelli with a synthetic stock. As much as I like wood stocks, I guess I still tend to gravitate to the synthetic stocks.

All that I hunt with are wood stocked. A Parker Hale 243, is one of my favorite predator rifle, the other is custom 223. For Deer hunting, I use one of the Winchester model 70's, or a Marlin 30-30, or one of the Savage 99's. Except for the Savage 99's which I acquired used, they are all in pristine condition. Of the 99's one is in pretty good condition but my favorite the 243, really could use a new stock, it has scratches so deep that there is no way the stock can be saved,

I only have 2 that are stocked with plastic, an AR that is a H Bar Colt and a Mossberg shot gun that rides in the pick up for snakes. Both of them I consider as if TSHTF weapons, I have them available. But most likely if it did happen I would grab the M14 instead, and it is wood stock.

Duck hunted one time with a guy that brought a Browning Citori with gorgeous wood. He spent the whole trip protecting that gun. I am OK with paddling the boat back with my synthetic stocked Benelli if needed. I don't own any "pretty" guns...

Let's see, I hunt with a cooper model 52 in some fancy wood (shoots like a laser and I love that gun), a Smith and Wesson M&P AR chambered in 5.56 (taken the most game with this gun by large margin), savage axis xp which has cheap synthetic stock which my son and daughter both used to take their first deer, and a savage model 11 on a mdt chassis which serves as a backup to my smith and Wesson AR. Also hunt with a crossbow which has taken the least amount of game but has only been used for two seasons so far.

Don't fear or worry about taking any of them to the field, don't worry about taking any of them out in wet weather. Just oil them good afterward and make sure they are clean.

In my opinion, a gun that is not meant to sit in a glass case at home to be looked at.

That is a beautiful stock for sure! Most of my deer and hog hunting now is done with a fairly beat up Marlin 336. I've thought about refinishing it, but every ding and scuff has a story behind it. I think it looks beautiful as it is.
I wouldn't mind owning a nice upland English double one day for birds. Hard to justify the expense right now though.

I also own a Browning A bolt Stainless Stalker with a synthetic stock in 7 mag. It is a fine rifle. I've taken many deer with it. When I look at it though, it's like looking into Kristen Stewart's eyes, kinda dead inside.

I prefer wood, the savage 99's, if they are "collector quality" NEVER, any that have been altered in any way are considered shooters, example..sling studs, non factory drilled & tapped, recoil pads ect, their are exceptions but not many

I started out with one I still own, Rem 700 BDL and added later a Browning A-bolt Medallion. Really beat up the A-bolt stock that now has a Bell and Carlson real tree camo. The Remmy is still in pretty good condition because it's a 30.06 and has been hunted much less than the A-bolt in 270.

I have a really nice Henry Golden Boy that has a very nice walnut stock that I wouldn't envision ever replacing on a lever gun.

But I don't baby any of my hunting "tools". I just don't abuse them. The main things I don't see as practical for a hunting tool is unnecessary weight, non free floating barrel and highly reflective of the sun. After figuring out these things through experience my go to bolt guns all have synthetic non reflecting stocks with free floating barrels.

I have great appreciation of beautifully carved stocks with engraved metal to look at, hold and shoot. Same thing with custom knives, which I own many of. But I won't buy a rifle or knife like these that I wouldn't classify as practical hunting tools that don't get babied and are put to good use in the field. If I ever had a family member pass on a rifle or knife that is in this class of beauty, I would treasure it and baby it I'm sure LOL.

Nothing like a wood stocked rifle they feel alive in my hands. I have my Dad's Safari rifles which he hunted the world with from the 50s' to the 70's and yes there are some dings in them and worn blueing but they carry the stories forward IMO. Every time I hunt with those Biesen rifles I think of my Dad as I imprint my stories next to his. The old master gun builders like Biesen and Fisher built rifles to be hunted with not locked away in safes.

Maybe we need a wood stocked AR topic duel

I'll stick with my ARs so I don't have to worry about scratching them up walking through brush or having them get wet and dirty.

Just how much can you beat up a gun hunting from a box blind?

Everyone always talks about how they don't want to scratch and ding their guns but really how much wear can they get?

My worst rifle is wood and it has its share of scratches and dings but it's spent many of hour in a open jeep riding rocky ranch roads, 90% of its wear came from that. And it's still in very good shape

I have an affinity for the older model REMINGTON BDL's. The .270 is my primary go to since the mid 80's. Hunted down n driving rain, sleet and dust and it still shoots better than I do. Gets lots of TLC and is still a 9 out of 10. I need another rifle like I need higher taxes but if a pretty BDL hits the trading post I probably can't stop myself. Well built weapons for their time.

I have ARs and a few synthetics.
But the octagon 22-250 Browning A-Bolt has some beautiful wood, and gets a trip to the blind a few times a year. Out of the case, boom, back in the case. This bench rest hunting is easy on the fancy wood.

Gun rack on a 4 wheeler through mud, rain and thicker brush that isn't cut will do damage pretty quick. In the blind, no damage but getting there is a different story.

They have made gun boots for 4 wheelers for almost 20 years

I wouldn't put any of my synthetic guns in a 4 wheeler rack

And I've never known anyone to go bushwhacking on a 4 wheeler hunting deer

You asked, I usually have a synthetic stock so I don't worry about it that much. Either way, it will tear up a rifle and you don't have to be bushwhacking to have brush hitting an ATV.

sitting on a deer blind gets boring. I like to sit on ridges overlooking draws and spot and stalk is also a lot of fun.

I love beautiful wood. I love to take it out to hunt, however, if I am going out to quail hunt on the king I dont take my Beretta EELL I take my beat up citori. If I am guiding I take synthetic stock guns. If it is just me then I will take the nice wood stocks. Really depends on the area, terain, etc. Love the feel of wood.
