So after getting some dozer work done and burning my place back in late December; I sent off soil samples yesterday to have them analyzed for both PH and NPK.

Pending the soil test results, I was wondering if any of you guys hunt the southern Oklahoma area(Bryan Co. 12mi east of Durant)and plant food plots?

If so, what are you planting(prefer a mix) and at what rate(pounds per acre)- I don't currently have machinery of my own(tractor, disc, ect) but I do have access to a no till drill and given my sandy/sandy loam soil I think this would be the best option anyway.

The main area I'm considering planting are these areas that were disturbed during the dozer work; I seeded all these bare earth areas with rye grass seed for erosion control back in December after the burn was done.

Areas before rye seeding.....

The Rye grass took well and all the dozer work areas were COVERED in deer tracks, so I re-seeded the areas that I missed the first time and we've got good rain ever since......

So I know the rye is temporary and really just there for erosion control; but what would you guys suggest for a fall food plot?

Oats and winter peas for the fall....and I would also suggest that you throw in some wheat incase you get a real hard freeze.

mix oats and wheat, peanuts are good too. I planted turnips and the deer loved them. Fertilize is a must

Will there be livestock on the property? if so they will hammer it as soon as it sprouts, be dead by the first hot week in summer & do the same with whatever you plant in fall.

Now / spring I'd plant either MBS spring deer blend or Turner seed spring deer mix. Both have done really well for me over the years.
After the seed heads turn brown / late summer you can shred, lightly disc or just use a homemade drag to knock the seed heads down & get some soil contact.
Then in the fall I'd plant Turner seed fall deer mix or MBS fall deer blend with buck plot booster ( funny name for different varieties of plant seeds).
Again shred, light disc or run a drag over it after seed heads are dry.

You may have to do some touch up planting the next year, if allowed to go to seed & livestock kept off of it you'll establish a base that will come back year after year with proper soil amendment.

Use the planting rates Turner or MBS recommend.

@ Rustler .... Thanks for the suggestions, and to clarify

There are no cattle on the property, it was EXTREMLY over grazed for 20+ years and I removed cattle from it to let the property rest as part of the MASSIVE clean up needed after the previous "cattle" tenant left.

Got my soil tests back and they are 4.95 & 4.58, with extremely sandy clay loam; so it looks like I'll be adding Ag lime to the main pasture and a pond, waiting on the soil test to come back from OSU for NPK recommendations.

Turns out there is an MBS seed dealer in Sherman, so that works out.

oats and peas will love that sand.. and with a drill as long as you keep it grass you wont have to even disc anything up just a good close mow.... On most sand fields around here we will get coastal to take and cut hay during the summer then on the last cutting we will move the bales and run the drill through it that day with oats... come jan/feb youll start getting rust to show and less interest in the oat so a good mow should bring on spring forbs for just a bit until the coastal takes over again... great way to utilize a pasture if conditions are right and a drill is handy
