Called in a coyote last night.
I stay amazed at their ability to locate a sound at night when illumination was just 3%?!
I think I need to get a different caller. The one I use depending on terrain is limited to 40 yards.
In 1-3mph winds movement and sound has to be nil!

I'm gonna figure these critters out!
Respect, Respect!

How do you mean limited to 40 yards? The remote? Or how far you can hear it?

If you need it louder, you might be able to get an auxiliary speaker for it. I knew a guy who ran a Spitfire (old school FOXPRO's weakest model) with an aux, and it was pretty danged loud.

He means the remote, LOL.

Somebody told me that coyote hearing is comparable to vision. They have the ability to hear something and know fairly precisely where it is, even at long distance. So far, I have seen nothing to disprove that claim.

I vaguely remember a study done a long time ago on this. The bottom line was that if a coyote could hear it from a mile away ( not a stretch by any means..) he could locate the source within a matter of mere feet ( 9, if I recall;l correctly..)
Dont know or remember how they came up with that, but after a few years of calling, I have no reason to doubt it, or refute it!

About the only time I place my call farther than 40 yards is if I'm trying to cheat an unfavorable wind, which is sometimes handy, but I've also called in several truck loads of coyote with a mouth call, which shows that when you get the set up in your favor, distance to the call isn't that big a deal. I guess the point is, 40 yards could possibly limit you in some instances, but it might also help you get more creative in your sets.

40 yards is not too good on remote range although I agree that's about the average I use in the daytime.
At night I am usually much closer as in a few feet.
When Foxpro came out with the new TX1000 remote I checked it and was able to get it to work under ideal conditions to over a 1/4 mile.

How good they hear is amazing. I had a friend who always liked to turn on the call and turn the volume to where he could barely hear it then mute and go get ready.
I was standing by a bush while hunting with him and a coyotes runs by me headed straight to him while he is putting the caller out and I am thinking what the heck.... he was playing cottontail so low I couldn't hear it at 50 yards but that coyote sure did.

Yes I mean the distance from the remote to the caller.
Last two times I have been out the wind has been completely flat.
Where I expect them to come and where I see them has yet to come together.
But this is only my second real attempt to call them in.
I'm learning and it's amazing watching their Wileyness.
