That they will bring out like trailing dogs?

Myself and a neighbor could keep some busy.

I know 2 guys that have trained labs specifically for shed hunting. Both out of state and are booked up a year in advance. The one in Missouri has 2 shed dogs, he takes one and his son uses the other. He has clients in Missouri and Kansas.

The other in Illinois trains dogs for duck hunting, but this last year he started 2 labs on shed hunting. Once word got out he was overwhelmed with calls for hos services.

On another forum they were asked if they will train a shed dog for a client, both said no. Their reasoning, too much time involved.

How does that work? Do they just charge them a fee?

I have thought about getting a dog trained for sheds, sound like a costly investment. I generally find 60-80 a year, but age has made me not want to walk the grid on 1000 acres anymore. Only 23 sheds this year, but I am just getting started, and I am already sore.

Seems like there's an opportunity there. I know there are some antlers that are worth a sizable chunk of money to certain folks.

Definitely opportunity there. I was told by a trainer that it wasn't a difficult task. Never tried it myself though.

That is what I was told as well. I was thinking about training our labs for it as another fun activity during the off season. I wonder what the going rate is for shed dogs? Do they get paid by the find or by the hour?

Neither have ever discussed payment, but I know one of them gains access to a lot of land to hunt by doing this. The guy in Missouri hunts in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. Based on his profession, he couldn't afford it without his shed dogs.

Trailing dogs don't show up for less than $400. And they can do a couple of calls a day if they are relatively close and easy. Tips too.

I know my neighbor has a deer that he'd pay $500 to recover his antlers every year. And he'd gladly pay $500 a day. Between him and I there would be plenty of $ and we'd also let the handler shoot a couple of meat animals to boot.

I figured you were clearing your fields to prevent punctured tires on your tractor. $400 a tire gets old in a hurry.

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason! nidea

Lots of shed dogs out west. Folks been training them for a few years now and lots of people have their dogs bringing them sheds up here. Can't believe anyone is paying to have someone pick up their sheds for them. Kits to train your dog for sheds is out there, plastic antler and a bottle of shed smell.

I could train my heeler/lab mix to do it, but if it ended up anything like his retrieval training, he'd find a shed, trot it by me proudly, and then haul tail away when I tried to grab it to eat it himself.

Anyone know what the buying price is for antlers, do they go by weight, measurement, general appearance. And who buys them. They are finally starting to get it the way, we even have a shed room, and they are laying all over the place.

I've found a few but I'd like to be thorough about it. I'd pay for a proven dog to come out.

I have done, shall we say, a little bit of dog training mainly centered on scent work. Training a dog to hunt sheds is not difficult or shrouded in mystery. Training a dog to blood trail is like training a fish to swim...
