I'm wanting to change the fluids in my differentials and transfer case this weekend on my 97 tacoma ranch truck. Looking at the manual, it calls for 3 different types of lubricants for these. The transfer case calls for API GL-4 or GL-5 SAE 75W-90 gear oil. The front differential calls for API GL-5 SAE 75W-90 "hypoid" gear oil. The rear differential calls for SAE 90 "hypoid" gear oil. What is the difference in these 3 oils. I've looked online to order and all I'm finding is the first one. Can't find "hypoid" gear oil or the SAE 90 "hypoid" gear oil. Any help is appreciated.

Hypoid refers to the configuration of the gears. The way I understand it, just look for the correct weight of "gear oil". I would use store brand 75w-90 in all three. I just changed the gear oil in my 84 bronco ranch truck diffs. It has hypoid gears and called for 80w-90 so I used cheap oreilly brand 80w-90.
But let's hear what some of the mechanics on here think.

Just trying to figure out why the manual would call for different lubes. I assumed the same as you that as long as the weight was same that they were fine.

I have always wondered the same thing. Why is/should their be a difference in the front and rear.
Don't foreget the limited slip additive if you have a LS rear end.

Why the difference between transfer case and rear/front differentials? Friction modifiers or additives for the differentials and not for the transfer case.

Gear oils & motor oils are rated differently, can't think about motor oil API when choosing gear oils, two different animals.
Hypoid gear oil in this case refers to those with specific levels of extreme pressure (EP) & antiwear additives.
The manuals get confusing because API discontinues, condenses, change API standards and auto manufactures get as confused as everyone else.
Years ago hypoid gear oil was gear oil with high levels of EP & AW additive, nothing else. All other gear oils were,,, gear oil without EP but with yellow metal corrosion inhibitors. Now. GL 5 is an API standard for gear oil with EP & antiwear additives, but, without yellow metal corrosion inhibitors. GL5 is high speed high torque applications (gear speed not vehicle speed) with higher levels of EP additive than GL4.
GL 4 is an API standard for gear oils with very little EP content but with yellow metal corrosion inhibitors. GL 4 is for moderate speed & torque (moderate speed & torque meaning gear speed not vehicle speed), rarely if ever used in gear cases with hypoid gears, it also has yellow metal corrosion inhibitor additive that the GL5 does not have.
The API viscosity rating 75w90 / 90w is more for a specific temperature range under normal operation conditions. Temp range of gear oil inside case not ambient.
One of the biggest misconception about lubricants is "the right weight is fine for all application" Very wrong, the correct additives for the application is far more important. For hypoid gears EP is a must. Hypoid gears slide together at their contact surface requiring EP & AW additives they are very prone to shearing lubricants.
But, if your talking about a vehicle that is not a daily driver, limited highway speeds, used for short trips, slow speed or limited use say less than 8,000 miles per year, You could use 90w EP for everything considering it is a ranch truck.
Just me, I'd use GL5(ep) 75w90 for transfer case & front diff, 90w GL5(ep) for rear diff. If the book says you can use either GL4 or GL5 in the transfer case they're obviously not worried about bronze/brass/copper bushing / bearing surfaces in the transfer case.
Again, I know folks that have ranch trucks that are used more than daily drivers, Id use what the book calls for. I also know folks that put less than 2,500 miles a year on ranch vehicles & rarely see speeds over 55mph, almost anything slippery will work, aka, cheap with EP where EP is called for. Of course you could use GL5 75w90 in everything, some of the newer GL5's claim to have yellow metal corrosion inhibitors, Claim to.

Viscosity grade. 75w is lighter / less viscous than 90w. 75w90 acts like a 75w oil when cold (flows easier), 90 when warm/hot. 75w90 will have slightly less drag for lack of a better term when cold. 90w is 90w in all temp ranges.
Again the SAE motor oil viscosity and SAE gear oil viscosity ratings / chart are two very different things. You simply can't think of motor oil viscosity when talking about gear oil viscosity, the way they're rated are different.
GL4 vs GL5 has nothing to do with viscosity, it is the amount of EP additives, GL5 has roughly double the amount of EP than GL4 does. Varies by brand also.
EP additives are what you want when lubricating spiral bevel & hypoid gears.
To make thing clear as mud, if you find a gear oil with SAE J2360 rating on the label it is by far the best, it exceeds GL5 requirements. Mobil Delvac 1 gear oil 75w90 is one I know of that meets SAE J2360.

Rustler it sounds like you know a considerable sum about oil.
Ive spent my fair share of time reading SAE ratings etc. and sometimes I find what I'm looking for and sometimes I leave more confused than when I started.

I think you’re way over thinking this.
Any parts store carries the right stuff, tractor supply or almost any farm & ranch store, heck walmart carries it.
Hypoid gear oil is just a description of an application that the oil is suitable for. Hypoid is a type of gear not a type or classification of oil. Not all hypoid gear oils are GL4 or GL5 compliant. GL5 is a newer classification of gear oils specifically for use with hypoid /spiral/ bevel gears that contain around 6.4% of EP additives.
Both of the ones you linked are GL5 & 75w90, why do you think you need both? One is for use with Limited slip.
I was going by what you said in your first post, transfer case calls for GL4 or GL5, no mention of manual trans or limited slip diff. I don't have a tundra owners or shop manual.
If you have a manual transmission that calls for GL4, I wouldn't use a GL5 in it unless I knew for sure it was roller/ball bearing and not yellow metal bushing type.
Do you have a limited slip diff? if so GL5+ or GL5 ls, or it will say on the label it contains friction modifiers necessary for LS diff use. Same stuff you'd use in a roller/ball bearing type manual trans that calls for GL5, the friction modifier help keep the synchronizers from getting sticky.
You didn't say how the vehicle will be used, that is very important to know if you want to use something other than what your owners manual specifies.

The GL5 gear oil is the important part. After seeing the manual, I'd use any GL5 gear oil 75w90 I found easily in everything. They make no mention of needing a GL4 with yellow metal corrosion inhibitors.
If you're really picky or overly cautious 75w110 is dang near the exact viscosity as the old straight weight 90 for the rear diff. 75w90 will work fine unless you haul / tow heavy at highway speeds long distances, if it worries you or you might use the vehicle for heavy use long distances use 80w90 or 75w110. Or select a GL5 75w90 / 80w90 that is also SAE J2360
If you have a limited slip rear diff you need GL5+ / plus / LS, or one that says for use with LS on the label.

Or you could use the one I recommended previously, GL5 in whatever sae weight you chose that is also sae j2360 is the best on the market. As much as I dislike royal purple products the one Navasot recommended would work too. Are my posts confusing or poorly worded?
