Almost a week into the season in some parts of Texas and I figured there would be a few reports of turkey kills on this forum already. I am heading out to hunt in Crockett Co next week and was hoping to hear something to get me fired up. The turkey counts on our place are way up and it looks to be a good year.

Well we saw more birds than we've ever seen on the ranch we do our youth hunts on in Brackettville. Saw more toms on the ranch than I saw hens, and the kids managed to knock down 2 birds, but we had a lot of misses.
I went about 25 minutes up the road to the north to hunt Scoops place in Kinney county and took a nice gobbler on Monday. Had a lot of them talking and called a few more in close, but couldn't seal the deal on another. Most there seemed to be occupied with hens...

I'd say you should be about perfect on timing. Birds in Bee and Guadalupe counties are broken up and breeding is well underway.

Well...we are going to give um hell. I am pretty optimistic about the hunt this year because we had a tremendous hatch in 2015. As you guys know the weather out there drives the animal population and the rains in 2015 and 2016 should be paying off for us for the next few years. We were covered up in jakes last turkey season and this last deer deer season we had an unbelievable amount of young gobblers running around. They were gobbling and strutting in November which is always a good sign. We also had a good number of jakes last fall pointing to a decent 2016 hatch. I have a feeling we will be hunting that 2015 hatch for the next few years. Can't wait!!!

Also, I sent an employee of mine to Mountain Home (Western Kerr Co) last weekend and he was able to kill one. Sounds like he had plenty of opportunity to kill, but couldn't get them to close. They had lots of birds around, but it was his first time turkey hunting in Texas hunting and the terrain was much more open than he is used to. Sounds like he called up around 15 gobblers to within 100 yards but he just couldn't seal the deal. As far as the turkeys in that area are concerned they were covered up.

We are just a little west of there. We are covered up in turkeys. Saw lots of birds last weekend, including lots of gobblers, without trying that hard. They were in full puff and strut and gobbling, but the gobblers had not all separated. Stalked in and shot a gobbler out of a group of 5 mature gobblers (and about 15 hens), with all 5 gobblers simultaneously on full display. When I shot the 1, another one he had been posturing with attacked him.

It's been tough sledding in Rocksprings. Birds will talk for the first hour after flydown, and then they are tight lipped the remainder of the day. Wind hasn't helped, but even under calmer conditions, I think it would still be tough. My guess is they are henned up something fierce. They can't be bothered to gobble back at a hen yelp. Gunna try to sneak in super tight to a rooster bird tomorrow well before sunrise. So frustrating. Early season always is. I've never killed a bird out here in the month of March. Don't know why I keep trying this early.

Youth hunt this past weekend in Callahan and Eastland Counties. Heard a few very far away, but couldn't get any responses. Frustrated, tried a cold call with no decoy, big gobbler came in silently, running straight at us, grandson missed the shot. Next time!

Decent hunting in Uvalde county. First bird we took Saturday morning was four bearded and by lunch I had put 9 different turkeys in front of 4 different folks with 8 taken. So the hunting was OK I reckon.

Dang DStroud, sound like you may have a turkey infestation. Let me know if you need an eradicator. Has it been like that in years past or is this just a good year in Uvalde.

No it's been better before the drought back 10-12 years ago but the last two years of good rain has brought them back strong. Noticed your from Vicksburg my next groups are from Florida and Mississippi. They made large donations to kids scholarships to come on these hunts as they don't allow any turkey hunting except these two annual hunts.... we barely scratch the surface. So most of their turkeys live and die never being hunted. I think I am safe to say these are the most expensive turkey hunts in the world. I will also say I don't get paid or tips I just donate my time so the folks that give all that money have fun and stay safe. I feel fortunate to be a part of a good cause.
