Was walking back to barn about 30 minutes ago and heard what sounded like a rabbit squealing about 60 yards off in brush. Thought it must've been caught by coyote, so I ran in, grabbed my rifle to try and get a shot. Coming back outside, I saw the head of something moving through the tall grass. Looked like a skunk, but was moving fast!

I chased toward clearing near creek and realized it was a badger! It went into some brush, so here I am in my shorts, and chuck taylors, so decided to give him a pass for the evening. I understand they can be....cantankerous.

First one I've ever encountered, and couldn't be happier!

Ha - I agree, without pics it didn't happen. I was to busy trying to get a shot with gun, and didn't think to get one with the cam.

Smelly little things. Found a dead deer with my dogs one time that had a badger on it...they don't convince real easy.

Somewhere I read that some indians called badgers "The animal with no fear". I been around 70 years, and only seen one in that time. Quite a sight.

My dad used to talk about men armed with shovels being challenged by badgers.

Shovels? We were 3 armed men, and 2 dogs and there wasn't an inch of back up in the one that was on that dead deer. I've actually seen quite a few over the years, haven't seen one act particularly afraid of me yet.

I only see them when they are snared, and they are ready to fight

We have spotted a few on our place. I don't care to kill them, they aren't hurting anything and its not like they are under every rock these days.

Maybe not every rock, but there are areas where there are dang sure plenty.

ETA: I don't shoot them because they smell too bad to skin.

Will tag this here, cuz it was in about the same spot.

Last night, just before sunset, I am sitting in a camp chair, drinking a beer, and reading the news on my iPad, when I catch movement out of the corner of my eye. I look over to my right, and about 15' away is a skunk walking straight toward me. Holy crap! I take about a nanosecond to decide if I run or sit still - I ran, watching over my shoulder to see if I am about to get stunk. Fortunately, the skunk is as surprised as I am and he has turned, not to spray, but to head back in the direction he came. Close call!

Badgers smell like skunks. I had to dispatch one in a foothold trap I had set for coyote. I was not about to try and release it. Besides, it was burrowing in the middle of my road.
