I shot a buck a few years ago at a feeder that also had a doe and two yearlings. Buck went down and the rest ran off. Within 10 minutes the doe and yearlings came back feeding around the feeder where the buck was about 5 feet from them.

I once shot a buck just before last light. There were cows in the area. I checked him out and went back to get my vehicle so I could use headlights to field dress. When I returned, there were 6-8 cows gathered around the buck, licking him. I moved them back, but they just stood there watching until I loaded him up and drove away.

What was it...compassion, curiosity, or just being bored standing around in the dark, waiting to be turned into hamburger?

We got out of school for a snow day when I was in high school. My buddies and I were driving around shooting rabbits and saw a covey of blues bushed up. I shot one with a 22 and he started flopping. Another bird ran over to see what was going on. Every time I would shoot one another would come out from under the mesquite to check it out until I killed the whole covey. They never flushed or ran. That was a good mess of bird.
