Im 14 yrs old and like to walk our property alot. Sometimes i have a .243, AR, others a 22lr pistol and sometimes Recurve bow. Sometimes i just walk up on a flock, and now that its almost season i can shoot a gobbler. Where shoot u shoot with the rifles? What about the bow?

Im no Turkey hunter (yet) but, from what i understand the mid neck region for shotguns and bows, not sure about the laws on private property but, i believe we're not supposed to use rifles for turkeys. I could be wrong on that though.

shotgun = head and neck
rifle = base of neck
bow = good body shot to break a wing(s) and hit vitals.

Using a rifle for spring season is a legal means for harvesting turkeys, except in the east part of the state where hunting for the Eastern subspecies is allowed.

If you are using a .223 or bigger just put it on the body. It will kill it.

with the rifle a FMJ works well on turkey body shots. Have seen finger size holes punched through the breast with not that much meat damage. Also a standing alert turkey shot high from the back or right above the beard works pretty good with a rifle. 22 take the neck shot.

Bow Strutting wing but or of facing straight away in the pie hole will make for a quick kill. Same goes for bow as rifle just below sings center of back just below wing butt or wingbutt from the side.

Yea just don't use a varmint load. Fmj works fine. Or use a .22, turkeys aren't that hard to kill.

With the rifle you will want to hit the base of the neck . Body shots can ruin breast meat . A body shot with a high velocity bullet of any type will hit with enough force to bloodshot or blow bones through a lot of meat . On a wild turkey the breast is the main meat , the rest is much smaller and tougher than a store bird . I have neck shot a lot of birds with a .223 and have found I get much less damage with low velocity down loaded ammo , bullet type did not seem to matter at high velocity. Accuracy at 100 yards is important for me to make the neck shot , I found military fmj ammo not to be accurate enough .

I do not disagree with anything above. But I've also had good success with a rifle shooting low on the turkey, with the bullet coming in below the breast, killing the bird, and maybe just taking out a leg or thigh.

And yesterday (opening day) I put a 17 hmr round through a Gobbler low and from the side. Dead Gobbler. Untouched breast.

I've had the same experience, show one low, basically gutted it and left the breast intact.

big bore rifle- blow there butt off it guts them and leaves the breast alone. Didn't believe until a old time hunter showed me one day when we were out hunting and did not have shotguns with us.

I learned it basically by accident when I decided to shoot a turkey while deer hunting and carrying only a .270. But I've repeated it a few times since.

It also works with a small rimfire rifle (like that .17), but without the gutting effect.
