I used to have permission to hunt there. Big deer and lots of hogs but then a rancher who owned 60percent of the land in Nixon decided he wanted out. He broke up huge average into small ranches and the quality declined. If it's your not subdivided in the area it should be good. Bucks at 7yo were in the 150s.

Just depends on the size of the place you will be hunting. Also depends on what oil & gas activity is on the place.

Buck, I hunt on a cattle ranch between Nixon and Smiley on the south side of SH 87. I kill deer, turkey and pigs every year. I haven't shot anything big but I did see some monsters there each of the last 6 years. This pic was one taken this past season ( alas not by me ). Two birds my son took.

I am amazed at this thread. I grew up there...
In the 70's deer hunting was good, if you liked scrawny 6 & 8 points. The Quail hunting was good. Coyotes hunting was great, but bobcats were kinda hard to come by. I NEVER saw a wild turkey growing up and the "Wild pigs" = Javelina.
Today, pigs have overrun the area, there is a turkey season, some NICE bucks are being killed in the area, and there seems to be more cats.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Dude, tags? Nice buck and toms!
I've hunted area centered on western DeWitt, northern Goliad, and Karnes counties my whole life, I'm soon to be 63, and hunting has changed quite a bit. By '78 all the way through the '90s, the area had hit rock bottom. Land use practices coupled by properties becoming smaller along with the fragmentation that brings took its toll. The human influence wasn't bad enough, but then the hog population exploded, and the native species didn't have a chance.
The last decade and a half have seen some better changes in land practices, and both deer and quail are doing well on lands that care about managing habitat that is appropriate for the species. Too much of the riparian areas where cleared and drained for javelina to ever have a toehold in much of the area again and this affected turkey populations as well. Areas that had those two species will probably not have them again as the drainages now resemble cookie sheets. Overall, too much of the land has been converted to improved pastures, and it will never be what it once was. Along US 183 on the DeWitt/Goliad County line, over the last couple of months, I've been watching a thousand or so acres of beautiful rolling hills covered with oaks and brush cleared being root plowed for improved pasture. Haven't seen that it awhile but it remains just as sad for me to see as it did back in the '70s.
