I finally got off of my on call schedule Monday morning so we packed up the Ranger and headed for Gonzales. I was trying to get my wife on a tom early in the game. As I feared, all the toms were henned up and they would barely even respond. I think we got three gobbles way off in the distance. We were about to wrap up and we saw a monster pack of 40 to 50 pigs 150 yards across the fence line. They were headed down into the river bottom. Some time went by and some of the pack fed out of the bottoms towards us. I told my wife her range was the closest decoy. All we had was her 12 ga with Remington 2 3/4 #6 pellet heavy dove loads. Animals never go where you think they should go. Old momma pig went up the hill behind us and crossed the fence and got right in behind us. Old momma pig busted me, snorted and started running with the 35 pounder piglets behind her. My bride popped one on a dead run and rolled him like a sledge hammer hit him. The official step was 23 yards. Later when I gutted/skinned it I found pellets penetrated all through the heart and lungs to the opposite side of the rib cage. From the last rib to the base of the head I stopped counting at 88 pellet holes. I chicken fried the back straps for supper last night, man that is the best eating size pig.
