What kind of competitions are in the 22 world? What kind of gun scope combo is needed?
I need to buy a 22 but might buy a nicer one if there is a reason.
Not interested in a big benchrest gun

Thinking of making my own match, but would like to see what comes up, as well. I plan to put a pic rail on my bolt action .22 lr and move over one of my center-fire Mil/ Mil scopes, when needed.

I would love to see a long range shooting competition for .22 lr. Long range for that round, anyway.

There is a range in Davis Oklahoma that has a small bore match once a month. It is 50 and 100 yard match. Some shoot palma style and some shoot with bipod. They have some that shoot peep sites and you would be surprised at how good some of these guys are with peep sites. I shot it one time and still have my match 22 but I didn't like shooting palma style because when you get in the sling like your supposed to your hand that is in the sling will be purple and numb in a short time. I still have a bunch of the 50 and 100 yard targets if Jason wants to have a match. There is some place that they go to that shoots small bore out to 200 yards.

I had an Anschutz 164 Sporter 22 that was lights out. Just one big hole at 50 yards with Wolf Match ammo. Sub-MOA at 100. I had a Weaver Grand Slam 4-12 on it. It was a $500 scope that I got on clearance at Natchez for $199. You can spend a lot on a 22, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to beat a $450 Anschutz for price and top-level performance.

I have an Anschutz 54 in a hunting style stock, can shoot 0.11 groups at 50 yards with it. I'm a believer in them.
It seems as though the Arlington Sportsman's Club has 22 matches you can contact them for more info. But that's the closest I know of.

Although not a dedicated .22 match North Texas Muiligun hosts a monthly "fun" steel match that has two .22 divisions. You can shoot the cof with rifle or pistol. It's a lot of fun.

The best stock trigger I've ever experienced with any firearm was on an Anschutz. It blew my mind.

Not interested in a big benchrest gun Never competed in the rifle comps but shot for years in the 22 Silhouette matches. These range from 25 to 100 yards chickens, pig's, turkeys and rams. All off hand shooting. Barrel lengths in the 7 1/2 to 10 1/2 seem to be favored. Last year I shot I set a 37 average and cleared the racks 5 times with a 40. That was when I was shooting a 10 inch Thompson Center Contender.

No one's mentioned rimfire handguns? I used to shoot bowling pin matches and it was about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. I haven't heard of anyone doing it anymore, though, not for a long long time.

I'd be in for sure if Fireman sets one up. Would love to see what I can do at distance with my old .22.

My local club in San Antonio puts on .22 steel matches, and they're what got me into competition shooting.

Lets keep this duce, duce match going. I'm in, let's find a weekend when JG can have us out. should be able to do entire match from the tower area. maybe fewer stages, 2-3 hour time.?? At the Arlington Sportsman's Club. I shot regularly in their .22 benchrest matches. This is a pretty anal crowd (great bunch of shooter, just anal), its pretty much who has the best gun with a harmonic barrel tuner, , tuned to the correct ammo. shooter basically lines up the crosshair on the tiny center of the target without touching the gun, uses the rest to adjust. touch the 1oz trigger and sends the round. One the shooter finds a round which will win in his gun, he will spend $5,000 on lots of this ammo, separated out by fps. Here is my rig, most who know me know I don't have the patients or the money to play this game

Buzz, you came to one of the precision matches, with the barricade, the drum, the roof, shorter times, ect.
The .22 lr match will be of the same style. FYI.
I expect the shooters the hold and operate the rifle.

So you don't actually shoulder the rifle you just line it up in a vise and blow on the trigger???

I have shot at the club in a couple of matches but they were pistol matches shooting at steel plates. I have only used one of my .22 pistols in the match. I certainly didn't and don't take it too seriously. I really don't compete against anyone else in as much as I compete against myself. There certainly guys there that are there to win and I see them out practicing the disciplines throughout the month. I practice but I don't practice with the purpose of winning a match but with improving my shooting.

I couldn't hang with the bench rest gig. I sold this whole set up, This game is for a few dedicated shooters. then like an idiot I sold the Blue Tony Kid semi auto, dang fine shootin rifle.
The custom rest above cost $1K, once you got the rifle "on target" all you touched was the round knob and the sprocket looking wheel to adjust crosshair. VERY sensitive, VERY accurate, once the VERY fine crosshair was where you wanted it, just touch the trigger.
The range looked like a miniature golf course with all the wind flags, spinning wind mills, ...

All you ballistic experts help me on this, When I shoot my current .22 rifle, its set for a 50 yard zero just cuz. When I shoot it at 100, there is a 9" drop. What is it to 300? 10 feet!!!?? will a scope have enough come ups for this ?? or just used Kentucky Holdover. I shot a turkey facing away at 100yrds, held on his head killed him in the back 9" drop...boom

I'll order a 20 MOA pic rail for my bolt action .22lr within the next 24 hours. Once it arrives, I'll move one of my centerfire scopes to the rumours and take it to the range.
Many centerfire cartridges need 1.0 Mil at 300 yards, from a 100 yard zero. I'm not going to be surprised if a rimfire needs 10 Mils, but I'll find out.

Dang y'all have me searching for a 22LR today. Stumbled across the new Ruger American Target can't find any of the 22lr in stock anywhere only the 22M ant 17HMR. Looks pretty cool. Nice laminate stock, adjustable trigger, heavy threaded barrel for my suppressor, and uses the tried and true 10 round 10/22 rotary mags. If anyone can find one I'm in the market. This is the one I'm looking for

That would be a great gun K or their cheap American Yea I saw that one to, but really liking this one. Jason you think a 10.5" 22 SBR would be able to do the 22 match? I really have no clue on the ballistic of 22 I've alway just plinked with it never even stretched it out. It doesn't matter what you have

No.
I think we will need all the velocity we can get, in order to reach that far out. And any wind will make things very difficult, even with a long barrel making some velocity.
Sure wish I would have forced myself to stop working and go shoot today. I bet the wind was a legit 25+ today. I sure should have gone and shot in it!

I shot a turkey facing away at 100yrds, held on his head killed him in the back 9" drop...boom I shot my 22 at 200 this week using cci standard velocity drop is 48 inches at 200. The wind was blowing 4 mph half value and I was holding 5 inches off and hits were dead center. You learn a lot from shooting a 22 at 200+. My rig right now does not have adjustment to get to 300, however, I am guessing based on hold over required to hit at 300 the drop is almost 10 feet! The other cool thing is if light is right you can watch the bullet in flight, not the trace but the actual bullet as it flies from 100 to 200 yards. Best when with sun is behind you just off center. All this talk of 300 has caused me to order a new optic that should give me adjustment necessary to dial to 300.

everyone needs at least one accurate .22lr That Ruger really looks great, is it out for sale yet? I think the best value for the buck is the CZ VRMINT. I ALMOST WENT THAT WAY TILL I FELL IN LOVE WITH MY Sako Quad Varmint. That KIDD rifle was hard to part with . Hell the paint job was almost as much as the rifle

I shoot quite a bit of "long range" .22, all suppressed with CCI SV. I'm running an MOA scope with a 30 mm tube. To answer your question Buzz, a standard 1" scope will not give you enough elevation to dial longer distances. My come ups with a 50 yd zero are, 6.25 MOA @ 100, 15 MOA @ 150, and 25 MOA @ 200. I believe my come up at 300 is something like 42-44 MOA. I don't have enough elevation to dial that yet. I can max out my turret, and hold my last mil-dot and make hits on a 2/3 IPSC at that range though. I'm about to order a 25 MOA rail which should take care of that.

I don't think it's out yet. Everything I saw was shot show 2017 was when it was announced but I found the 22M and 17HMR on gun broker just no 22lr

I shot these last Sunday. Left to right are my 100 yd, 150 and 200 yd targets. I've had the 100 yd for a while now, and he gets abused. He's been repainted and hammered back out straight multiple times. These are great popper targets I picked up at Academy for $20.

This is the one I'm looking for I want this rifle.

Yeah, it's a x ring. Not sure if the eotech is the correct optic, but the kids love it and it's easy for them to use. I did have to get the higher cheek weld for it to line up right though.

yes you will need a real scope. Roger that lol I usually don't shoot too far, what do you need to reach out there? 1" or 30mm Rimfire specific scope or will the centerfire ones handle the crazy recoil This is something I'm starting to get into and would welcome any advise That Kidd rifle looks amazing btw Thx

There are also rimfire silhouette matches at the Haltom city gun club and the Arlington Sportsmans club. Competitions are open to all comers not just members.

Patrick, there is a group in Utah that have a rimfire challenge. Many of them use Sightron and SS on custom Ruger/Valquestern rifles. They have a huge youtube following and trying to grow it outside of Utah. Marksmanship Challenge https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzDSJ-eBsPCJl99XVN9Y79g

I love shooting 22lr. These are my 2 favorite 22lrs. Both are extremely accurate. Savage/Anschutz 54 sporter from 1968 Custom CZ455 with a 24” Shilen SM Ratchet barrel that I just got.

I had a Savage Anschutz 141 Sporter, got it for Christmas in 67. My folks paid $89.50 for it. Loved that gun, sold it of course. Let's get this .22 match on the calendar, so we can plan ahead. Whenever JG is ready of course.

I wonder if I have flight time enough to shoot at 300 yards, get off the rifle, and move over to the spotting scope.
