While out arrowhead hunting the lease yesterday we had a pretty good scare. After a successful arrowhead hunt (daughter found one on cattle trail) I thought we should we should check one more spot and my boy luckily stepped on top of a rock and it started buzzing right below him less than a foot away. I was right next to it wearing snake boots luckily. He retreated under a boulder but rattled for a good bit. I need to get them snake chaps! We were watching out for them but they normally see us before we see them.

Snakes may be out any time it is warm enough. I have seen them out every month of the year at my place in north Texas. Similarly, we had turtles out sunning themselves in early February already as well.

I've caught a couple Hognose, and a Speckled King the last couple weeks. Definitely need to pay attention.

Heck, they never went in this year. At least not in Webb County.

Biggest rattler I ever killed was the weekend before Christmas in 1996. Wasn't until I got home and kept feeling the cactus thorn in my pants leg that I realized he had struck and missed my leg, but hit my pants. The 'thorn' was one of his fangs. Been wearing snake boots ever since when it's above 50 degrees or a sunny day.

Yeah, I should have clarified, they are always out in Texas. We have run into more in December than any other month. It seems they are more exposed in the open and visible when it goes from cold to warm quickly. I have yet to see one in the summer but I also don't go hiking around in 100 degree weather. It was 32 degrees the day before we saw this one. Seems 50-60 degrees is the magic number where we are on a south facing rocky slope or any place the sun hits.

We need some at camp. I have never seen so many mice and rats. They are buildiing nests anywhere and everywhere.

Being new to TX (from PA) I have to ask. Are all snake boots created equal or are some brands better than others?

We have copperheads and rattlers in PA but sightings are rare, bites even more rare.

I'd say they are all pretty much equally effective but some brands are more durable and comfortable than others but like anything else everyone has their preferences. Chippewas have a big following it seems.

Big snake Andy!

Got his twin this morning. Pretty sobering to think he is as long as my five year old is tall.

Pretty much wear snake boots all the time unless the temp has been below 40 for a few days. if there is a sunny day in the 40's or above the rocks heat up but they will be out but a bit lethargic. Spring fishing on the ranch ponds see more copperheads, rattlesnakes and moccasins. I carry a walking stick now when hiking through the ranch and poke around a bit and take a slow step.

Ditch line by our construction site, seen about 10 water moccasins in last two weeks. Was blowing leaves out from under porch at my lake camp, and blew two copperheads out right next to each other. Done tired of seeing them already.

Saw 2 an hour ago. One is a big sucker. Doing some work around my 40' container and they were wound up trying to make more babies I think. Before I could get to them with my tongs they went back under the container.

We were at our lease near Quanah this weekend. 11 rattlers killed in 24 hours.

My wife nearly stepped on this one in the front yard earlier this week.
Almost 4 feet long, pretty fat and healthy looking.
Good thing I mowed a couple of days earlier.
Already need to mow again!

I go on snake alert whenever I see the first new plant or tree budding out.
