Just reading on Texas Parks and Wildlife website, is there no spring turkey season in the Sam Houston National Forest?

Nope...not a huntable population. The last season they had closed in 2011 or 12. I called in a jake back in 2005 or 2006, but he never cleared the trees. I know a guy who who took a bird before the season closed some years back...

There are fire ants in hill country and south Texas and there are rios everywhere. The issue is habitat and the initial block stocking methods originally practiced in the area. There were fewer birds released in earlier years with the block stocking method and though a small remnant population still holds in parts of the forest, they are few and far between. Have you seen how thick most of SHNF is? There are a few areas that are maintained, but many are pretty thick. Even though more management occurs there now than in the early years of super stocking, there has not been any initial stocking efforts to enforce the already struggling population except for the super stocking that took place on private land nearby back in 2007-08. Right now the only plans for super stockings are along the Neches and sulfur river basins, so unless those birds released in Montgomery expand onto the National forest and reinforce the struggling populations I'm not sure when there will be another season since there are no current plans for restocking. I was told the fire ants ran em out, not sure how true that is.
