A buddy and myself would like to kill a cow elk each for the freezer, probably next winter or early spring. Who has them, and how much ? PMs are fine or answer on the forum. Thanks !

One question to those of you who have eaten both. Any difference in the taste between game farm elk and wild elk ?

I have eaten both and "in my opinion" the high fence was better, probably corn and protein. But the free range was really good also.

Too late for Wyoming draw but some leftover cow tags may be available after resident draw.
Colorado has OTC tags.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. We're not wanting to go out of state again just for a freezer filler. Looking for something around a $1000 or less each and a relatively short drive. It doesn't have to be a fancy lodge or five star cuisine either, just a place to have a reasonable chance to connect, and we will motel it if necessary.

I can tell you the 1 pictured above I ate the tenderloin last night and it was much better than the bull elk I've shot, was more tender than some of the Axis I've shot as well.

If you are looking for a quality hunt I would suggest either Texas Hunt Lodge located in Hunt, Texas. Or Flying A Ranch located in Bandera, Texas.

Kiowa Hunting Service in New Mexico does cow elk hunts starting in December at reasonable prices. Shot my only elk(cow), along with two of my sons, there in 2015.

Small world. I shot my only cow elk there with my son and two friends a few years ago. Mine weighed 480 field dressed and they aged her at 18 years old. It was fun, but happened very quickly !

My processor screwed up and ground everything except the backstraps and tenders. But yes, the hamgurger was very tender ! Seriously, the backstrap was tender enough for an 18 year old elk.

Yes, mine is tender. Just don't over cook it. Steaks, tenderloin, etc cook to medium and enjoy, if you overcook, they get tough.

drycreek3189, I had a lot of hamburger made and took about 22 lbs to Bellville Meat Market and had some sausage made. It is good. BMM has a good rep in this area.

We hunted on one of Ted Turner's ranches south of Raton. The guides took heart, liver, kidneys, and uterus I think for the biologists to check. They pulled the " ivories " and aged the elk. Mine weighed 480 field dressed, my son's 420, and my two friends, 380, and 320. Good eating !
