I'm thinking of a rebarrel to 22 Creed. used search but was inundated(sp) with pages of 6.5. Wondering about length, contour and such. Use will be for varmints and just just plain ole fun.

I believe you neck down 6 Creedmoor brass.

Get a 1:8" twist, and load 75 gr bullets. I load 75 gr A-Maxes in the old .22-250 and produce 3200 fps MV with a 24" barrel. The 22 Creedmoor will produce more velocity than that. So that will help your decision in barrel length. Shorten the barrel, lose velocity. Shorten the barrel, gain maneuverability.

The 22 CM is a screaming round, and pretty cool. The 2 most common bullets I have seen used is the 75 A-max and the 80.5 grain Berger bullets. An 8" twist barrel will work, but I would run a 7" twist to shoot any bullet you want. The 8" twist is marginal stable for the 75 grain A-max. But, if you wanted the cats meow of bullets, get a 6" twist barrel and shoot the 90 grain Berger with a monster BC for a .224" bullet.

Running the numbers, the 90 grain VLD will work fine in a 7" twist.

If you're going to run a 90 grain bullet and screw with brass , would it just be easier to 6creed and shoot 105's? And it might be factory loaded soon

For contour you'll want a heavier contour that won't heat up as quickly as a 'hunting' contour. You can find the contours available on each manuf. site showing shape, diameter, weight, etc.

It's close. But if you look at the numbers, the node goes to the .224" 90 grain. The G7 BC on the .224" 90 grain VLD is .274, where the 6mm 105 Hybrid G7 BC is .275. The BC's are almost identical, yet you will gain even more speed because of the lighter 90 grain bullet. If you scale the 2 rounds (compare the bullets, velocity, and drop and wind drift), the 22 CM really shines with the 90 grain VLD over the 6mm CM.

Is it worth the brass prep trouble etc?

Running a 6mm CM brass case up into a 22 CM die is very simple. You are only sizing the neck down, and that is a very easy process. That would be the only brass prep needed, otherwise the same.

And on new Hornady brass, I'd run it through the sizing die even it I wasn't changing calibers.

In other words, if I bought 6 Creedmoor brass, and was going to load it with a 6mm bullet, I'm still going to run it through the die and round up the case mouth, and make sure I have neck tension. So no step is really added changing 6 Creedmoor into 22 Creedmoor.

I have really used mine quite a bit this season with both 80.5 and the 80gr AMax.
My 24 inch barrel runs both bullets in the 3500 fps neighborhood with my max loads.
Wicked fun is probably the best description I can come up with right now.
A couple of buddies and I took 21 deer with mine in a couple of days of culling. 18 DRT and 3 made it about 20 yards all but 2 were shot with 80.5 but shot a couple with AMax just to see what difference if any.... none noted.
Lately mine has been mainly used on coyotes and a occasional hog.

Mine is 1/8 twist and while Chad is correct that with 80gr AMax a 1/7.5 may give better downrange BC numbers I can assure you the 1/8 will stabilize and shoot the 80AMax and the newer ELD-M which is what I am shooting this weekend at coyotes just fine. I have the 6 mm Creedmoor too but it's a little too much for predators with the heavies that I shoot in it.
I have rang steel with the 22 Creedmoor up to 1000 meters While at the NRA Whittington Center.

Derrick at Horizon is where I got mine and he normally has them in stock. They are Whidden and very nice dies.
You could also use bushing dies as well and is how I first started out until I could get FL dies.

Chad or anyone- how would the 22 CM compare to the 22 Nosler? From what I have read you can just swap your upper and use 6.8 magazines and then you get ballistics similar to 22-250 out of your AR-15 with the 22 Nosler.

The 22 Creed is like 500 FPS faster than the 22 nosler. The 22 nosler is really just a round for AR platforms

Got it - thanks HF. So would the 22 Nosler be good for someone that is tired of watching hogs just laugh when they get shot with an AR shooting 223/5.56?

It may if you reload. In the 22 Nosler with a 1/8 twist barrel you could load heavier 70-80gr bullets and get 3000-3100fps. Can't do that with the .223 due to magazine restrictions and you velocity will be slower by 100-300fps.
With the 22 Creedmoor holding another 15gr of powder over the 22 Nosler you gain some additional velocity just depends on barrel length.

Exactly. I am sure that we will see guys chambering bolt guns in the 22Nos, but it will make little to no sense.

So if using the Whidden die's, what brass would you use?

Virgin Hornady/GAP 6cm brass is yielding a loaded neck diameter of .254" when loaded with a Berger 80.5. This gives .003" clearance in the standard .257 reamer neck. Virgin Lapua 6.5cm brass necked down and loaded with the Berger is yielding a loaded diameter of .255-.2555". Ideally, I want .002 to .003 clearance in a field gun, so if I am going to run the lapua brass, I will probably run them through a light skim on the neck turner to get the .0025. The Lapua brass is looking like it will handle more pressure with the added matrial in the web and case head along with the small rifle primer pocket. After about 5 firings at 43.0 of h4350 and 80.5's, primers are loose or falling out of the Hornady brass. Admittedly, this is a stoutish load.

Long winded answer, but if you don't want to turn, run the hornady or order the reamer with a .258 neck and rock the superior Lapua brass.
