Recently, a new range was opened up just north of Winters, where I live. It's not just any range, but a genuine 1,000 yard range. Having pneumonia and being forced from working, I called the owner and met up to stretch the legs on my STW. I had been dying to shoot at extended ranges, and this was my chance. Shah, the owner and operator, met me at his range. All he asked was a daily fee of 25 dollars and to bring a couple cans of white spray paint. He has targets set at 100, 400, 600, and 1,000 yards. I confirmed zero at 100 and proceeded to hit targets at all extended ranges. He was impressed, but that's an easy thing to do, from what I gather. Essentially, the range fees go towards upkeep of the range. He doesn't profit from it. He just enjoys long range shooting and meeting others that enjoy it. I went out there to shoot, and I left having done that as well as making a friend. He is a wonderful old man, with a passion for shooting and a very nice range. If you are looking for a thousand yard range, this place is well worth whatever drive is necessary to get there. If you decide to go, let me know. If I happen to be off, I'd gladly meet you there.

Yes, just call him and arrange a time to meet. The range is right off hwy 83, south of Abilene. It's on the East side. I would say about 15 miles south of Tuscola, and 5 or 6 miles north of Winters. He has a sign on the fence, and you can clearly see the range right there. Can't miss it.

Thanks for sharing Sneaky. Both my kids will now be in college in Abilene, so this is great info of the new range. I'll be checking it out for sure later this spring/summer as I'm sure my wife will be wanting to visit more often now that both kids will be out there. Always good to get out of this metromess...

Yep, and that's exactly what he's doing. Just sharing his range. He told me that he wants me to feel like this is my home range, and to use it how I like. The daily fee is nothing for what you have access to. I plan on going out there tomorrow to work up a load for my 25-06.
