No this is not one of those threads.
I just wanted to point out that the Creedmoor has replaced the 7-08 as THF's collective "best thing since sliced bread". Obviously both are put to use and do their jobs quite adequately but I have noticed the Creedmoor being mentioned more than the 7-08 in recent times.
It's one of those "when you haven't told anyone you shoot a 6.5CM in 5 minutes" kinds of deals.
What is the reason for this? Glorification of long range shooting (which I'm very cool with but it has been put on a pedestal in the last few years)? Not wanting to get a "normal" caliber such as the 270, 308, 30-06?

Hold your horses. The Fireman will be along shortly -- he loves the 7-08. Maybe more than the 6.5 CM

Its a good caliber. In the end your not going to do something with one you couldn't do with the other.

Since when? Sure the 6.5 is the new kid on the block and it seems like "everyone is doing it". But there will come another sweetheart in the future and the 6.5 will be talked about like the 7mm08 as in remember when? They will more than likely both hang around for quite sometime.

I think most of the recent discussions have led to the 6.5 recommendation due to the individual wanting factory loaded ammunition vs. loading themselves which has a lean to the 6.5. Both are great calibers, two of my favorites. You can't go wrong either way.

When ever factory .260 match ammo gets cheaper and more plentiful.

My issue with 7mm-08 is that it gets no love from manufacturers lately...

My issue with 7mm-08 is that it gets no love from manufacturers lately... Ammo manufacturers or rifle manufacturers? It's pretty well established in rifles but I think that CM has had many more factory loads released for it in the last 2 years.

I would say both. Rifle manufactures are not putting in the high profile new rifles. Rpr didn't, new Remington's didn't

6.5 creed is here to stay. Even the big boys at Nammo decided to put it in their lapua line with a small primer. Couple that with the fact hornady ammo is cheap, easy to find and fantastic, and for the non reloader it's a better choice. For the reloader, the selection of bullets and the fact that it's not finicky at all (the 7-08 can be) it's just a easy choice for most. I'm a fan of 7-08, mainly because I like 7's so I'm not knocking it. But give me a 7 creed and I'd take it any day over a 7-08. I personally run a 6 creed, but I think simple case geometry makes it a better platform to build on. Now don't get me wrong, there isn't a deer or pig in the state that could tell the difference between the two with proper shot placement.

I've owned a 7-08 and really like the cartridge, I gave it to my nephew, and I own two 6.5CMs. Again the 7-08 was a really nice rifle and performed well but the 6.5s I have a just more accurate. They were much easier to find a good load for and they are just a lot more consistent.

I think that's a big part of the reason to be honest Seriously? I bought mine after hearing about the cartridge and researching it. I was looking for a long range cartridge with low manageable recoil...and the 6.5 CM is it!

I agree, 6.5 CM is an awesome round. I used to own one but I actually sold it for a 7mm-08 and I am loving it.
The 6.5 CM has been around longer than people think. I think it really took off with the recent craze over long range shooting. Honestly, I love how it's getting more people into the sport. It's really a great all around caliber for anyone, new shooter or expert marksman.
I made the switch to 7mm-08 because I wanted a new caliber in a 16" bolt platform. I was between the .308 and 7mm-08 because they do fine with shorter barrels. I chose the 7mm-08 mainly for the lower recoil; I can shoot it all day, but a .308 wears me out.
A 6.5 CM would have worked fine for me, but I wanted a change and theoretically the larger diameter bullet should get more fps with the short barrel.
The 6.5 is here to stay for sure.

I shoot both, weekly, literally. And shoot both to 800 yards. If I had to pick only one short action cartridge to use forever, it would be the 7mm-08, but I am a hand loader. I can, and have made brass from .243, .260 Rem, and .308 Win. It runs on H-Varget, which hasn't been too hard to get the last 24 months. Give it a 24"-25" barrel, and it'll sure deliver some foot pounds with a 162 gr bullet. Plus the wind drift, inside a thousand yards, matches my 6.5 Creedmoor. If a guy wanted a short action to get into extreme range shooting (beyond 1k) it would be tough to beat, especially when it has been Ackley Improved (which I am likely to do on the next barrel) That leads to Tony's 100% correct statement, that case geometry matters.
If I weren't a hand loader, the 6.5 Creedmoor is the clear answer.

I'm waiting for them to reintroduce the 30 TC as the 7.62 Creedmoor and watch it become the new hottest thing.

If I weren't a hand loader, the 6.5 Creedmoor is the clear answer. If you are thinking about a 7-08 AI, then look at the 7mm SAW that West Texas Ordnance is building. Basically a 7-08 AI but based on the small primer Palma brass, and some other minor changes. It has been working very well for them in PRS. https://westtexordnance.com/7mm-saw/

I was squadded with Clayton at a match last October. We talked lots about it, and I watched him do very well with it. He got it right with that wildcat!

Good friend of mine has several rifles built by Clayton. He got a 6.5x47 on a Claymore action from him a couple years ago, and has shot it out (3500+ rounds) in 2 1/2 years. It is down at WTO right now, getting swapped over to the switch lug system. It is getting a Bartlein barrel in 6.5x47, and a second Proof Research barrel in 7 SAW. He is pretty excited about getting it back, ready to go hammer some steel with it.

My 260 will kick your 6.5's butt every day of the week and twice on Sundays! There, I said it. Boom. Drops mic. <insert Chuck Norris emoji here>

Both are great calibers, two of my favorites. You can't go wrong either way. Just a quick search Basspro.com shows 15 factory options for 7mm-08 and 7 for the Creedmoor 6.5. I've been looking at 7mm-08 for a light rifle. And ammo availability is important. So what do I need to know?

Barrel twist for sure and what is the intent for the ammo. Hunt vs target?
