I don't know if there is a section made for this question? But Mushroom hunting seem like it would be interesting to try this time of year out around creek and river bottoms. Does anyone in the East Texas area get out and look for these Morel Mushrooms?

My brother in law does it in Arkansas....I'd end up poisoning myself....wish I knew more about it and had time to do it....

North Texas morels are great. Should be still early for em. They need soil temps and moisture to be just right. Usually around March when they start popping up, but I hear it's been warm so....... Look for loamy soil and some elk, ash, and poplar trees. Logging sites and burns are great spots.

Don't pick the false morels. We'll look around in a couple of weeks but I think it should be early for them.

Those are not morels. I'm in Wyoming but used to gather them in N Texas. They need constant soil temp of at least 45-50 and the right moisture. We used to go out in early April, late March. Some talk up in Oklahoma is they will be up soon. Sounds like first week in March or very end of Feb. would be good time to start looking. Find those dead and or dying elk, ash and sycamore trees. They also like old burned areas. I think we may luck out during our hog hunt, but we'll see. Good luck. They dehydrate nicely to save for later use.

These are cow patty mushrooms found in abundance in central Texas . Kattelyn on TFF and THF is the resident mushroom expert. I thought she might chime in on your post.

Milton, good luck. I've read they are out there in east Texas, and as everyone says, going late Feb through March seems to be the best here. Morelhunters.com has a decent sightings map - they haven't updated for 2017 yet though.

I grew up in missouri where we would find them all the time. I never ate them though. It wasn't until I was about 16 and had already moved to Texas that I tried some when my grandma brought a bag down that I fell in love with them. And now I never see them growing. C'est la vie.

Talk about government overreach... thats a damn shame. psilocybin has so many great affects on the brain too, that last much longer than the "trip" itself...

They can still be found, especially in East Texas.

Hey y'all I did a write up for everything that I know of harvesting morels in Texas I've been trying to find anybody who would let me come even look on their property for morels. But where they natively grow is such a narrow band, and it's about three weeks out of the year that they're around.

We find them north of Muenster but family is very protective of their morels. Usually find them earliest in mid March but can't wait to see if they're up in about a week or so. Can find lots if conditions are right.

Typically you'll find them in a narrow band that stretches all the way from Blanco to Texoma. They start popping up mid March through early April. Temperature needs to be between 50 - 80 degrees. Typically on north facing slopes in mixed woods under cedar, oak, elm, and ash. They don't like wet feet so they're not in creek bottoms. They don't like acid soil so you don't typically find them in east Texas unless there's been a large burn that's leached the acid out of the soil... but it does happen.

I haven't seen any morels but oyster mushrooms are pretty common.
