Anyone here ever heard of corn from a deer feeder killing a cow? I know if a cow eats too much it can cause problems but has anyone ever seen it happen?

I had a rancher tell us once that we had to fence off our electric feeders so the cows could not eat the corn. He said it would hurt/Kill them. I think the guy was a buffoon as cattle are feed corn in feedlots all the time. That is the only time I have heard something like that, other than this post.

We nearly killed a horse that got in the shed and ate a bunch of oats, and we've had a couple of goats and sheep die that got into corn. I guarantee it happens but not very frequently-if a cow knocked over a feeder there's probably going to be more than one cow, preventing any one of them from eating too much by the time they fight over it and scatter it.

It causes a condition called acidosis. It can kill a cow.

I've never seen it happen but like others have 'heard' about it.
I imagine if a few had access to a large amount of deer corn it could kill them from uncontrolled/untreated acidosis.
Quite a bit of deer corn is labeled 'do not feed to livestock', that's due to the aflatoxin level being higher than allowed in livestock feed. I don't know for sure but Id think they'd have to eat a bunch of it.
Starving cows will eat stuff that will make them sick or kill them.

The cows I have hunted around never messed much with the amount of corn a feeder would throw out. They usually injest more dirt than corn when trying to eat at a deer feeder.

We had a bull die on our lease this year and the landowner thinks it got into the corn. The feeder still had corn in it and there weren't any pics of bull in the pen. I think it may mace got snake bit but I'm not certain.

Serves them right, I didn't buy the corn for the cows.

We had a cow die on us after knocking over the feeder and eating too much corn durine the night. She was already bloated by the time daylight came about and we could see her out in the field.

Idk about cows but horses will founder on it. Had to spend all night once walking a high dollar race horse that had foundered on corn....walking a horse and giving him mineral water enemas is not a fun way too spend a night.

Was on a place with stationary turkey feeders that we had to fence off from cows for this very reason.

If you have cows, fence the feeders.

Thanks Guys, I can't imagine a cow bumping a feeder to get enough corn to kill it They can't eat corn off the ground very well due to their muzzle size. The problem comes in when they knock the feeder over and suddenly have access to a pile of 50-100 pounds or more. But as I said above, most likely there's going to be more than one cow, and they'll fight over it to the point where no one cow eats too much. As others posted, best just to fence your feeder if you have a concern.

They would have to eat a lot and have little browse and hay and also water to cause the problem.. but yes whole kernel corn can do it... like if they ate a good bit then ate nothing else and took a long stroll to water

In our area we don't see the problem... our cows can even be put into a clover patch with no issues.. they are just use to so much change in their system... they can get the same problem with eating to many acorns also

How much corn would they have to eat? We have a couple feeders not fenced with wireless cams and they sometimes come in. Deer, turkey and hogs eat most of it. They can't knock over these feeders.

My feeders are fenced. Some cows got in but feeders weren't knocked over. These cows have plenty to graze on too. Anyway, I won't be going back to that lease so 640 acres in Bosque county may be open

I feed 300 steers everyday a 7 pound ration that's 1/3 cracked corn ! So can it kill a cow yes I guess if they ate a bunch . But from the amount of corn thrown by a feeder no !
