I saw the post on Aoudad meat being pretty rank.
I'm curious, of the other exotics in Texas, which ones are good to eat?

Axis is at the top of my list.

Eland Scimitar Horned Oryx Red Lechwe Axis
In that order, imo.
I've also eaten Texas killed Addax, Nilgai and Blackbuck Antelope. Very good, but not as good as my top four.

I have had Lechwe...mine was not in the same class as Eland, Axis or Nilgai...guess it is what they were eating...mine was shot out of a swampy area in Botswana...

Nilgai was the best, Axis was second. Aoudad was good ONLY if pressure cooker cooked.

Axis, eland, and oryx for me. I wasn't all that impressed with the Nilgai that I shot. He was an old, rutted up bull. I'd like to shoot a Nilgai cow and let her hang for a week before butchering to see if it helped.

I've had alfalfa feed cow Elk from the Van Horn area (mulie mike) Axis Blackbuck Oryx Aoudad
I like whitetail much better than Aoudad. I'll donate the meat, if I ever get one. Elk was good, but not better than Axis or Oryx. Blackbuck was surprisingly very good also.

Best I ever had was some Eland that came off a ranch near Uvalde. A buddy shared some of his kill and it was incredible! I love Axis. Oryx is very good as well.

Nilgai is the only one mentioned that I have had. It was great.

Everything is good to eat if you know how to cook it. I had aoudad ribs and rice for lunch; it's a recipe called pulaw.
Here's my list from what I've eaten:
Elk Addax Axis/Red deer Scimitar horned Oryx Nilgai Fallow/BB/Dybowski Sika Aoudad Japanese sika/Texas ibex Corsican sheep
Last edited by chital_shikari; 02/13/17 08:33 PM. Reason: forgot ibex

They all eat well. Just have to know how to clean, age, and prepare.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.
