Took this guy out Sunday am (MLD). Spikes measured 13" long.

Was real warm in the afternoons, but the mornings were cool and foggy.

This big ol' moon coming up in the evening didn't help the hunting, but made for a cool picture.

Spikezilla for sure!

Yeah, they both were. No cajones. We got a handful more we'd like to take out. They can throw some weird stuff.

We shot one a few years ago.

After that experience, I have often wondered, is it a genetic issue or is it something physical that happened to them?

Couldn't clear a feeder pen fence as a youngster?

We always killed a few "different ones" when I hunted west of Brady. Seems some of the boys had a hard time getting everything over the fence...

From talking with the biologist and researching it, it's a condition called Hypogonadism. It's due to a specific plant that grows in the area around Llano, Mason county, basically chemically castrates some bucks. Appears to be worse during droughts and dry times, but we have one or two at every age class.

They turn into big fed-up steers. They don't rut or fight, and their necks never swell. Some keep their velvet year round, and some shed at odd times (like this guy did).

Thank you sir. It's a Marlin X7 in .270 Win, added laminate stock and stainless trigger guard. That spike was notch #33 on her.
