checking to see what yall recommend for dog feet protection. Went out for a 5 day trip and the pups were in pretty bad shape at the end. We had some boots on them and then went to duct tape which seem more comfortable for them but their feet still took a beating. There wasn't a lot of sand burrs mostly prickly pear where we were. Thanks for any tips or recommendations.

I always kept my dogs on screenings rather than concrete. Pads were tougher that way. Never booted my dogs.

There are 2 other products I use aside from Lewis Dog Boots. One of them is tuf foot, which is a spray that you apply to your dog's pads twice a day for 2 weeks leading up to a hunt or season, then you drop it down to once a day, then maybe 2-3x a week. I know a few guys that use this and really like it.
The second is musher's secret, which you apply a couple times a week, and then right before you go hunting. Its a thicker wax type product that you apply to your dogs pads and in between their toes. This stuff was originally made for dogs up north that had problems with getting ice in their pads and it would harden.
Both of these products can be bought at gundogsupply.com and Steve Snell has actually put together a short video for both of them, describing how to use them.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

I use ozone oil for my dog's pads along with any other scrapes. It works really well. I get mine from ozoneoils.com

I am sure your asking for a different purpose, but to add to the thread. I just hunted my dog in marsh and mud for 6 out of 8 days. A product I used on my dog's feet quite a bit this year for the marsh and wet field hunting that I do is Musher's Secret. It is intended for waterproofing a dog's feet for hunting in snow. Also to help keep balls of snow from building up between the pads. Mud will do the same thing. For my dog hunting in shallow water and mud all morning or day, it really helped.

There isn't a lot you can do about pear and tasajillo--on a damp day in will go thru Lewis boots, the toughest dog boot made. Dogs just have to learn to watch out for pear--some do, some never do. Duct tape boots work well on sand spurs, they are just time consuming to make. Bike inner tubes are the cheapest boot but hard to find in the right size if you aren't near a good bike shop. You tube has some videos on how to make inner tube boots. If your wife sews, you can knock of the cordura style boot with canvas or cordura. You don't have to add the velcro, just leave two flaps at the top to fold over duct tape.

We make them from motorcycle inner tubes. Work great and cheap.
