This says a lot about his experience with thermal. You have to NUC all manual thermals at intervals. It's not a downside of that particular product. That is just the way it is with the modality. In my experience, every automatically NUCing thermal waits too long between NUC's and you end up manually NUCing anyway. Some Thermal Units Like the new Pulsar Trail XP38 is auto and do not have to manually NUC the units. This is what I meant byt that statement. But then again I am sure you already knew that since you know so much about it.

There are 3 levels/modes of NUCing.
You have Automatic where the unit does it at a given interval. Some are too slow and some are too frequent. It is on a timer which almost never meets actual needs. In Automatic, the unit covers the sensor and initiates the NUC without user input.
You have Manual whereby the user has to both cover the sensor (via covering the lens) and initiate the NUC.
Then some units have a Semi-auto NUC whereby the user initiates the NUC and the unit covers the sensor and the user does not have to do this step.
