Took some quick pictures through the scope and the Yukon in the background is exactly 55 yards away. I currently use a IR Defense Mk ii that has 1.5x optical magnification and the Pulsar XP50 says it's a 1.6x optical. After looking through the Pulsar compared to my MKii I can easily tell the Pulsar has a lot more magnification, I want to say it's a 2X optical for sure. I looked at the specs on my Mkii and it says it has 1.5x optical with 22 deg field of view. The 35mm lens mkii has a 35mm lens and a 12 deg field of view and says it's a 2.5x optical. I looked at the specs of the Pulsar and it says it's a 42 or 50mm lens with a 12.4 deg field of view. When I zero my Mkii I usually have to zoom in all the way at 50 yards to hit the small hand warmer. After messing around with the Pulsar it seems that there is more magnification than 1.6x which would help. If anyone has any ideas on magnification on thermal let me know. I am not an expert on this and if anyone is please feel free to let me know.

Cool, thanks!

Interesting that you decided that the 1.5x MKII was the accurate level of magnification and the Pulsar was much higher. Obviously, at least one is off. Are you sure the Pulsar isn't accurate and the MKII is too low? Maybe both are off?

I don't know which is off, but one of them is for sure. I will add a pic from both looking at the same object from the same distance.

I think core micron size effects field of view which translates to 1.5x looking different

Here is a quick camera phone pic.
This fence line is 40 feet away.

Multiple items affect "perceived" resolution. Among them: Lens size (diameter/fov),sensor resolution, sensor pitch/pixel size, display resolution, display size, eyepiece magnification (if any), firmware and digital zoom. Different companies choose different criteria for selecting their magnification rating. ATN advertises a 4.5X mag on their Thor HD and it compares to the Pulsar XD 50 rated at 2.0X. I wish there were an industry standard.

I think the MKii is actually a 1x. Saw the specs on the Patrol and everything is the same and it's a 1x optical.

The MKII is spec'ed at 1.5 and 2.5. Patrol uses joystick control and MKII uses turrets. The Patrol and REAP are similar. Different lenses.
