Wife and I were on our way to Fredericksburg for wine and food, and I happened to pass through Zabchekville and saw Green's Sausage, which is about all there is at Z-Ville. I had heard that their kolaches were great, so I did a 180 and went back to have a kolache or two. Wife and I each had a sausage, cheese, and egg kolache, and the wife termed it the best she ever had. Saying it was the best EVER is more than I'm ready to say, but it was pretty danged good. Wish it had jalapeños.

Went back in and got a dozen.

Green's is a worthy destination for a road trip....neat place.....

Best kolache's I ever had were made by an old Czech lady in Holland Texas......all home made in her home.....early 80's....never had any better....

I can't say Greens are the best ever either, but I haven't seen anyone beat them yet. Next time you pass through try their sausages and bacon. Any favor will do - pick your favorite.

I stop by Green's every time I am coming from the Fairfield deer lease (if they are open) but have yet to try their Kolaches. I usually pick up a package of their chicken thigh fajitas which are some of the best seasoned I have found.

Kolaches at Weikel's in La Grange and Hruska's in Ellinger are also very noteworthy!

Theres a donut shop on hwy 59 in the town of Linden. Dough nuts are sub par but they make one of the better kolaches ive had.

To me kolache mean poppy seed, fruit, or cheese, with sausage is a pig in the blanket. Weikel's is about the best non homemade ones I've had. I've had a few from bakeries I didn't like, one in New Braunfels, and the tourist trap on I35 in West. Sister in law bought some from a bakery down town West that were pretty good.

Well if you really want to get technical about it:

A Kolache is a type of pastry that holds a dollop of fruit, rimmed by a puffy pillow of supple dough.

A klobasnek often uses similar bread but is filled with a link of sausage or ground sausage. Some people also refer to these as kolaches, but they are more accurately referred to as a "pig in a blanket".

After sampling every one I could find for the last 15 years, my favorite is Weikels in La Grange. And yes, a kolache has fruit in it, not meat. I also like ones with cottage cheese or cream cheese in them. Maybe we can get an official ruling from a real Czech on cheese filling as a kolaches or not. I say yes.

My favorite is poppy seed and cottage cheese, all the fruits and cream cheese ones are second by .oo3 of one per cent.

From my Polish/ American coal miner heritage. My grandmothers and my mom made all of these on a regular basis. Churches and firehalls still make them and sell them as fund raisers in the Wilkes Barre and Scranton Pennsylvania area where a large segment of the population are of Polish or Slovak descent.

Kolaches are fruit filled pastries.( I have seen them advertised with meat fillings used in Texas)
Golabkis are stuffed cabbage or pigs in the blanket.
Pierogis are unleavened dough dumplings filled with a variety potato cheese combinations, farmers cheese,
sauerkraut, or fruit sauce.
Throw in a ring of kielbasa for good measure.

At the risk of them selling out more often...next time at Greens ya'll got to try the long thin stuffed "Lil Sizzler" styled smoked breakfast sausages...killer for sure. Take a cooler too, you'll regret it if you don't.

Greens is a must stop kinda place on the way into or out of Temple VA for me and we've eaten the warm PIB's & fruit filled kolaches almost every time I've gone to the VA. Just dang hard to put mustard on the PIB's and drive at the same time.

If you've got the time, the sitdown diner at Greens is well worth the time off from behind the wheel too...but most times I'm tired of being poked, injected or scraped on so the warm PIB's are a real treat.

I'm as true a Czech as they come. As HH said- Klobasnek is a pig in a blanket, or that was the way my granny, great-grandma called em. Kolache- fruit, poopy seed, cream cheese.

I don't think a poopy seed kolache would sell well.

I will one day perfect the true Kolache, and in my world there really there's only one, the CREAM CHEESE. I won't stop at West anymore as I feel like I'm buying a loaf of bread with a dash of fruit. Originally from Needville area, still a few crazy Czechs around.

I don't like stopping there because parking is a pain in the [censored] and the restrooms are iffy, having a 15 month old we like to only stop where it's nice and clean.
