For a good mix of long range accuracy and powder efficiency in .30 Cal, is anything better than the 300 Win Mag? #6642629 01/21/17 05:45 PM

What .30 cal options are there that are equal in range and accuracy to the 300 Win Mag, or should I just go with the Win Mag?
I was lead to believe that the Win Mag sits in the throat based of the Belt and not the shoulder which can harm accuracy, is this false?

I want to be able to use the heavier 30 cal bullets.

Stick with 300 Win Mag. Tons of brass, tons of data available. Don't tell Chad they're low in the accuracy department his rifle doesn't know that.

Both my 300s shoot sub-1/2 MOA... Can't imagine what would happen if they were any more accurate.

Guess I'm off seeing that if I was going to build a 30 cal mag chambering it would be 300 Norma.

You are not alone, once my 300wm barrel goes will consider 300Norma. However if OP is looking not to build and does not reload then 300wm is hands down choice in my mind.

300wsm is a sweet round. I wouldn't trade my 300wm for any other .30 cal magnum though. I handload for all of my rifles, but I like being able to swing by Academy or Walmart and grab a box of hunting ammo on my way to the lease, if I need to. Hornady Precision Hunter shoots great from my eifle.

I handload too, but I think the 208/212 Hornady's are the sweet spot I'm looking for, so maybe a 24' 300WSM is for me.
I think I could use it too interchange a R700 SA chassis with my .308 and .260 too which could be nice with a few hunting
stocks and one chassis to move stuff around and change things up.

I've hunted with a old Remington model 700 300WM for a long, long time. It's a great round, just find a rifle that will shoot tight groups and you can hunt any big game in North America! OBTW my old rifle loves Hornady Superformance in 180 grain SST's. Sub 1/2" MOA at 100 and 4.47" MOA at 400 yards. Go get em, Elk

300WM is an old favorite here, I have had very good accuracy with it too.

I couldn't say about today, but at one time 300WM was a favored long-range match cartridge, if I understand correctly.

30 cal magnums have somewhat feel out of fashion for the 7mm mags. There are some running them in elr but same goes for 7mm and 338 plus size calibers. The army just switched to 300wm but some of the special forces recently dropped the 300wm for the 300 norma mag.

I really love my 300WM. Mine is a semi-custom on a R700 action, Lilja 1:10 barrel finished at 27" in a McRees precision chassis w/ a S&B 5-25x on top. I load for it with Redding Type S bushing dies, H1000 and the 208 amax (going to switch to ELD-X eventually) in RWS brass and it is very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I'm using a pretty mild charge of H1000 which yields an average velocity of 2968 fps.

In that case, a 300wsm is probably perfect for you. I have a short magnum (.284 Win) in a chassis too. It's my #1 long range rifle. Don't forget to post pics when you're finished with her.

Gravy, the 300 WM is an all time classic, and it will do anything you need it to do. I love mine, and there are some new awesome bullets coming out. Hornady just came out with the new 225 ELD-M, which has a stupid high BC and is 1.655" long. You need a 1:9.5" twist, though. My rifle is a 1:11" twist, so I'm sticking with the much shorter 225 BTHP bullet (bullet stability is based off of bullet length, not the weight, so the longer bullets need more twist to properly stabilize)

Some other newer options would be the new 30 Nosler, which I would really like to play with more. The 30 Nosler has about 8-10 grains more case capacity than the Win Mag. It is also a beltless round. I have had EXCEPTIONAL accuracy with the 28 Nosler, and the 30 Nosler should carry over to it. It should push the same weight bullet about 100 fps faster than the Win Mag.

There is the 308 Norma Mag, which is slightly smaller in size to the Win Mag. There is also the 300 Norma Mag, which is based off the much larger 338 Norma Mag necked down to 30 cal. It requires a 338 Lapua sized action, though.

The 300 WSM is a decent round, even though I have never been a fan of it. It was designed to push a 150 grain bullet to the same speeds as a 300 Win Mag by designing an efficient case. But when you get to the much heavier, higher BC bullets, it falls short due to case capacity. Also, if you plan to shoot the long skinny heavy bullets, you have to run it on a long action. The bullet has to be seated out further. If you try to squeeze it into a short action, the bullet seats so deep there is no room for powder, and the performance suffers even more. At that point, you might as well have a Win Mag. All the WSM calibers have this issue when trying to push the long heavy for caliber bullets in them. The only one I would consider building is a 338 WSM, which is a necked up 325 WSM. This case is the most efficient design for pushing the heaviest bullets the fastest with the least amount of powder. You could say it gets good gas mileage!

The 300 WM is a good one. If you wanted something a little more exotic, I'd try the 30 Nosler, if you can get past the initial cost of the brass.

Yep the 30 Nosler my friend Mac has is pretty awesome...we were shooting it and getting a tic over 3000 fps with a 210 grain bullet. I shoot 185s and 190s in my 300 WSM. I'm really not fond of WSM caliber, but my little rifle is extremely accurate--and 185 bergers have always done well for me. I have never been a big fan of the win mag...but no doubt it is very popular, and there are lot of options out there...if I were doing a custom tomorrow in a 30 mag....I'd go with the Nosler...

Every caliber I own can be purchased off the shelf. I didnt buy a 6.5 creedmoor till I started seeing on the shelves. My 30 cals are 7.62x39, 308, 300wm all of which can be found in any Walmart, Academy, etc. Im not convinced that boutique rounds have a significant advantage over tried and true calibers other than bragging rights and bbq talk.
