Busted duck off the tank this am and haven't seen anything since. Winds 20-30 with gust up to 40 mph. Am I wasting my time?

I'm interested, I was looking to maybe try an evening hunt. But know nothing about how the extreme wind effects ducks.

Sounds like they're roosting on it, they probably won't be back until after sunset. You can catch them a little earlier usually if it's a cloudy day

When I lived in Lubbock, I had some good hunts in the evening but they were in fields. Where are you hunting at?

Unless they are feeding really heavy on grain and coming to water periodically through the day, id just come back this evening and see what happens.

hunting stock tanks-dickens county. Ok so here is how it went-
we have 3 tanks on our place-1, 2, 3. tank 2 is by one of our main gates-got there a little before day break and busted a flock off early so went ahead to tank 3-sat there for about an hour with nothing-returned to tank 2 and there was 8-10 feeding there-they took flight and I missed-decided to sit there for a couple hours and had 3 singles come in-lucky enough to take one! returned to tank 3 and busted a single off there-sat for a short time then decided to look for quail and came home with just the single duck. On the way out though drove by tank 2 and another 5-6 busted as i drove by!
So, looks like I should have just sat it out at tank 2-winds 20-30 with gust up to 40. 3 inch #2 steel shot with a modified choke-took about 15-18 shots with only one hit. Bad shooter or rough conditions or wrong choke? Would IC have given me a better chance?

I've been stuck on a call with work since 5:30am. I'd rather be sitting on a tank enjoying the sunshine and gentle breeze you're getting.

I use light modified (between IC and mod) over decoys. For longer shots I use improved modified (between mod and full). You should NEVER use a full choke with steel shot.
Ducks don't like to fly in extremely heavy winds so that might have been why you didn't see many ducks flying. Our action today was fast the first hour and quickly tapered off when the wind started kicking up.

Yes sir. I've got 2 chokes, a pattern master short range for dove and teal and the extended range for ducks and geese and we typically dont have shots futher than 30 yards.

They may put out a true full pattern with steel shot but the constriction is not a true full constriction. In all situations checking the labeling is key. Most true full constriction full chokes are labeled "Not for Steel."

Your throwing a softball pattern at them
