I might get to go this year. What shells should I buy? Lead or Steel. I can shoot up to 3.5's. What shot and shell?

If your not near water and arent planning on shooting any other waterfowl i recommend lead. Tough birds that eat plenty of shot just to keep on trucking.

I shoot 3.5" BB's to knock those suckers down and sometimes depending on how high they are flying you need it.

Thanks Dove are migratory and don't require steel.....only waterfowl....not sure about cranes but would think steel is the safest way to go...

Nontoxic Ammunition Requirement Sandhill Cranes MAY be taken with lead shot. However, Wildlife Management Areas and Federal Wildlife Refuges have special regulations requiring nontoxic shot for ALL game bird hunting, including Sandhill Cranes. Straight off TPWD. http://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/regs/animals/sandhill-crane

You can shoot lead at them. Not waterfowl. 👍
