Long story short I am planning to "build" my 700 in 30-06 before I go to England hunting in October. For the last 5 years it has had a Nikon prostaff 4-12, some weaver mounts/rings (what gun store had in stock)and good ole fashion 150gr core lokt. My biggest problem with the gun is I noticed the last two seasons if the gun takes a bump, it seems to throw the sight off. I don't believe its the scope, could be wrong, and assume the rings/mounting aren't the greatest. Checked torque and seemed ok.

I am looking to pick up a scope (looking at vortex viper) to shoot out to 400yds. Also looking for reccomendations on good mounts. I have a DNZ mount on my 308 savage and seems to take a beating but I don't if that's my best option. Also, is it worth taking the rings, scope, gun to a gunsmith to have the scope and mounts mated up and made true? I don't hunt long distance much so this gun will stay in safe a fair amount but want it to keep accurate through abuse.

Last question, is the 6x of the Viper going to be too much if get within 50yds of something? Only issue I worry about because every other scope I have has a 3 or 4x minimum.

Thanks
Dale

I have several variables, and I usually keep them set on 6X. I think you'll be fine in that regard. I've shot deer at 30yds on 12X before.

I have no experience with DNZ mounts but many on here have said positive things, and they look pretty stout. If that is what you want I think they'll be fine. You don't have to spend $200 on rings/mounts if you don't want to, particularly if you aren't beating them up.

Proper mounting is important but can be done without a gunsmith. I tinker a bit so I have my own torque wrench and ring-lapping equipment. I spent about $100 total on all of it and that's a couple of trips to the GS. I'm way ahead at this point.

All of mine typically live on 6x as well and I've got stands from 40 yards to 150 yards.

Sounds to me like you don't hunt that much, no need to break the bank unless you want to. I like the vortex scopes. Look into the diamondback. I think it's a good scope at a reasonable price. If you want to spend more look at the viper. Rings and bases fall into the same category, I think Leupold bases and rings are good that is what I use. Hope this helps.

I just bought this scope below for my son's 308 rifle. The Natchez sell price is below my dealer cost on this unit, and I think they have it priced incorrectly. It came in today, and I will be shooting it this weekend. Messing with it, it has all the features I wanted on a smaller tactical style scope for a hunting rifle. So far so good.

little clarification, I hunt at every opportunity. I hunted every saturday from september 1st to December 31st and any holidays i had. I now am hunting every saturday with my 22mag squierrl and hogs. The thing is, i hunt in the swamp in SC and every shot ive taken has been under 50 yds so i typically just use my 308 with a 3x.

This gun will be more dedicated to hunting when traveling or if get chance to hunt bean fields and such. Like i said, like to spend the money up front on a good combo to make sure i can trust the gun/scope if it gets bumped or travels in a pelican from the US to the UK.

I'll check that scope Chad!

I would start off with Leupold dual dovetail bases and Burris Signature rings w/inserts. I've had them on a rifle I've hunted Africa with 3 times and this combo is very tough and reliable.

Ill look at the tally and leupold rings. I don't know that its true but to me it seems better to have a one piece mount if wants strength but I don't know if that's true at all.

Opinions on the Viper? Read couple reviews saying it blury at full magnification

What is platform and what is your budget

Mine seems fine... I think people get older and blame it on the glass not being good as it use to be peep

Looking to spend under $400 on scope. Under $100 on rings/bases. I like vortex for the warranty. I own 5 Nikon prostaffs but was trying to venture out to a little better glass

CameralandNY has a special edition 3.5-10x44 Meopta that is a killer deal @ $350. Meopta made the Zeiss Conquest for Zeiss, and this is the same thing.

The Viper 3.5-10x50 is in your price range. I have the now discontinued 3-9x40 and I like it for deer and hog hunting. Stays sighted in well after bouncing around the lease in a UTV all season. I would suggest getting the sun shield as well if it's like the 3-9x as it has a lot of glare when pointing toward the sun's direction.

Excuse the ignorance but for about 400yds and less general consensus is the 50mm 9x is a better choice?

Dalep this is one of the best things available right now for $350, if you slow your roll some I think if your are loving the vortex the pst and some other will come down even lower since shot show is this week.

You may also think about a picatany set up if you knock your scope off a lot.

The Meopta from Cameraland would be my choice too. I've had one for three years and it is a great scope. IMO it has much better glass than any Viper, especially in low light.

I've mounted scopes for people using pretty much all of the mainstream rings and bases; Talley, Leupold, Weaver, Burris, DNZ, etc. They all work well. I doubt the issue is with your Weaver rings but with something else, if you have the steel rings. I've never seen the steel ones fail. They are my least favorite ring to mount but one you get them on they work.

The reason to use a one piece(picatinny) for me is not strength but the extra mounting latitude you get. I like the looks of two piece bases better but don't use them anymore. If you purchase two piece bases there is a chance the scope you buy won't be able to be mounted. I've seen it more often than you'd think.

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I have once on the scope I purchased from CameraLand. Scope wasn't broken but I liked the turrets better that were on my Conquest. Meopta sent me some at no charge.

Customer service for something that cost under $400 is the last of your worry.... along with warranty it would have to be a factory flaw to be covered.. and your still paying for shipping and time is expensive.... remember the All star fishing rod days.... yeah these rods are so good if one breaks we will replace it... that was all and good until someone wanted a new rod and broke it to get a new one... shut that down good and quick.. you live in a world of spend the money and get the better model or buy this exposable model at a fraction of the cost then go buy a new one if it gives out... I bought a bushnell 4x16 from wally world the other day for a 22-250 that its main purpose is a kid shooting within 150yrds... I put it on with an old set of Leopold rings... eye sighted it at 100 and was on paper.. took three more shots to dial it in and holding really well with cheapo rounds.. know what you need and don't overspend

If you haven't stumbled across this website I'd recommend having a look as the author has reviewed many scopes in your budget and has covered warranties on the good ones too.

https://tangotactics.com/best-rifle-scope/

I've purchased a Vortex Crossfire 2 based on the reviews on that site and I've got to say it's an amazing scope with lifetime warranty and I haven't looked back on that decision at all.
