Quick question. I have a Rem 700 Stainless 5R in 300 WM. If I did a basic, straight-lined flute job, roughly how much (or how little) weight would I lose from the rifle?
Thanks

Depends on how deep the fluting goes. You will generally shed about half a pound with fluting. It will also change up the barrel harmonics, and change up any load you have worked up. From talking to Frank Green at Bartlein barrels, he does not like doing fluting. Bartlein makes very light fluting grooves compared to others. He explained to me that most of the time, fluting removes enough metal to cause stress in the metal and it flexes, which causes the barrel to warp or bend slightly. He HIGHLY recommended any fluting be done by the barrel mfg so they can air gauge the barrel after the fluting to see if there was any change in the straightness of the bore. The deeper the flutes, the more stress potentially seen.

Aren't there also several profesionals who flute with reckless abandon with no observed ill results?

Depends on your current contour, and how deep the flutes go. My "Light Palma" contour Rock Creek barrel lost a pound of weight from spiral flutes. Straight flutes would have made the barrel 2-4 ounces heavier. It was fluted by Kampfield, then cut, threaded, and chambered. It shoots terrific.
But I would be concerned about fluting a barrel that has already been fit to the action, chambered, and shot.

Thanks I have the same rifle. You're not going to lose much weight by fluting that Rem Varmint/ Sendero contour. It's already lighter than most varmint barrels if that makes you feel any better.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

I had my barrel done at Kampfield Customs. Started out Criterion barrel 26" and 6 pounds, had it cut to 22" and heavy fluting. When finished, barrel weighed 3.5 pounds.

Thanks all. With it shooting sub-1/2 MOA, I'm reluctant to do anything to it. But, I wanted to see if I could get significant enough weight reduction to risk it. I'm thinking I shouldn't touch it.
