So I just spoke with a gunsmith who has a rifle of mine that I was going to have a break installed and re-cerakoted. He said when he was looking the rifle over and checking the barrel for how much life it had left, that he noticed that the bore was off-center. It's a factory rem barrel. Has anyone ever seen this?

This is what the smith actually texted me...

"The throat is not concentric to the bore. It's very easy to see on a borescope; on one side you will have lands and grooves going all the way back to the chamber neck and on the other the lands will not start until well forward of the neck."

I'm not doubting this smith's honesty as I trust him already. My question is if this is a warranty issue from Remington or is it possible that a previous smith could have caused this while "accurizing" the rifle?

If the rifle has been "accurazied" I doubt Remington would honor any type of warranty work. Remington QC was so bad there for a while, I wouldn't put anything past them.

Shouldn't matter as long as the bore is straight. I've seen Morgan from class3machining thread some combloc rifles where the bore is no where close to centered.

First load I built with 130TSX shot great at .5-.75". The problem is that I kinda want a more traditional all around bullet for this gun as though I love Barnes for reliability, I generally prefer them for tougher game. This rifle will likely be a sheep/deer size animal and down as I have a 28nos for the bigger animals. I'm worried this issue could cause the rifle to be overly finicky.

This is more common than not in mass produced rifles. Even some custom rifle builders half [censored] it, and cause this. Shilen built me a pre-chambered barrel for a Savage, and I saw this very thing when searching for rifling with a long loaded bullet. Three scratches around part of the bullet, no scratches where two more should have been.

Buying a great barrel, and having a reputable gunsmith chamber it is a significant part of the reason for buying such a barrel and hiring the Smith, to avoid this.

There isn't anything to worry about, as far as I can tell. If it will shoot that bullet, that well, it will shoot others. Buy some bullets and work up a load.

So I've got the potential of picking up a factory take off for next to nothing. Do you guys think that if installed by this smith and crown recut that I have anything to worry about as far as producing a very accurate rifle??

If I was going to go to the trouble and expense of paying a smith to rebarrel a rifle, I wouldn't do it with a factory takeoff.

You have an (assumed factory barreled rifle) that shoots 1/2-3/4 moa and your what if-ing it wont shoot with another bullet into putting a different factory barrel on it???????

I say stop what iff-ing yourself and try another bullet!... heck you may find a 1/4 moa load for it with something else, ive never had great luck with barnes bullets in any department and they are expensive.

Seems to me that it's stuck in his head that his barrel is not right, and he won't rest until it is fixed. If a fella ain't happy with the performance he is getting, I don't know what else to tell him.

Have it cut off at chamber end and rechamber it!

No.

How about just work up a load and be done with it? The rifle is putting bullets where it is supposed to. How is that a problem? Why do we need a solution to this?

Sounds like they didn't take the time to indicate off the bore, and used the OD instead. Or they just totally effed it up. No real surprise either way given the state of big green these days.
