Went out yesterday just to look at ibex, not great pics but we were well over a mile away. Buddy has a bow tag and I told him I'd show him some spots I've been where they usually hang out. Sure enough we spotted three groups from where we were.

These animals are crazy, I spotted a nannie yesterday about ten feet up in a tree on the face of a cliff. Last year my buddy spotted one waiting to jump over a 10 foot regime and one came from behind rammed it in the backside and knocked it down the cliff. I think I enjoy watching these things more than I like hiking that mountain and hunting them.

I have put in for the rifle tag for several years. Wish I was close enough to go watch them.

That is, statistically, one of the lowest success rate hunts in the country, from what I understand. Ibex with a bow in the Floridas. It is one tough hunt. Good luck to your buddy. If he can pull it off, he's earned it.

A buddy of mine drew that tag. He's easily the best hunter I know. He had an opportunity and missed high because of the steep angle. There's a lot of variables to line up on that hunt to get it done. It is truly a challenge, by all accounts.

i make it up there 3 or 4 times a year and check out new spots. I've hiked most of it now, if I ever draw it should be an easy hunt. Honestly though I enjoy taking people, pretty satisfied just doing that there are so many ibex up there you could basically set up anywhere around it and spot them. Getting the courage to climb it and chase them is a different story. The bow hunt is doable, but I think it takes more mental toughness than anything. The people who are successful bed them at dark, then start hiking at 2am and are ready to shoot right when the light comes up. That is not easy to talk yourself into doing though.

They are very tough and smart animals. Their eyesight and hearing are remarkable. And they depend on others with them for safety. The more I am around them and observe them the more I learn. Great pictures and I know why you like them.

Thanks for the pics. I had a muzzle loader tab back in the 90's and spent a week chasing after them. I saw them every day, pretty much all day, but never managed to get close enough for a shot. The wind was brutal and destroyed my tent. The rocks where worse and they destroyed a fairly new pair of boots.

Y'all are scaring me. At 52, I'm not nearly the rock-jumper I used to be. smile

(If TT (and Rusty smirk ) will abide my presence, maybe I can give him a call and at least get him to say "There they are, have fun!" if I draw.)

Nice pictures, especially for the distance. What were you using camera wise?

Cool pics and awesome country.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

If you ever draw I will hike with you and pack it out for free. That offer stands for anyone on here that draws if I am available.

That's awesome I would love a muzzle loader tag, very hard to draw these days.

Well, that's about as generous as it comes. If I draw, we'll do some negotiating on that price. smile

Ibex are incredible animals. New Mexico is probably as close as most of us could ever get to a real ibex hunt. Thanks for the pics. Good luck!
