Young Gonzalo is a trooper! Busy kicking leukemia's butt. And never had the chance to get out and go hunting. Never shot a gun until yesterday. Denny Vazquez with Texas Outdoor Child brought a nice TC .223 and other options but after shooting the .223 he stuck with that.

After getting comfy with the rifle we went looking for an animal to shoot. Plan was to kill a white tail buck but I also need to thin the aoudads. After serving aoudad barbeque sandwiches for lunch ol Gonzalo was down with helping me with that task.

Cruising the ranch we saw plenty of animals but no shooters until we got to aoudad alley. Nice grassy valley with a steep cedar covered bluff. Saw a group of aoudad ewes and juvi's and the wind was in our favor. Since Gonzalo hadn't shot further than 35 yards (and for the first time yesterday), I knew we needed to stalk in quite a bit closer. Remember he'd only shot on a bench with bags. I assured him missing would be ok, grabbed a shooting stick, and off we stalked.

Gonzalo had never tried to sneak up on ANYTHING. We were pretty loud at first but he takes instruction great and after 50 yards or so we were getting much stealthier. Still had another 75 yards to cover but I was a little more optimistic. Mind you, we are stalking some of the wariest critters alive, and there's about 8 sets of eyes and ears working against us.

At about 80 yards one of the juvi's started staring at us. So we're as close as we're getting. Set up the shooting stick and Gonzalo got ready and the one that busted us started walking and stopped broadside and I gave him the green light to shoot. He squeezed off and it looked like a hit. He "assured" me it was! Gotta love a rookie with confidence!

We went back to the polaris where Denny and Gonzalo's mom were watching the stalk play out. Gonzalo was real ready to go recover the animal but Denny occupied him by ragging on him that he might have missed and why did we come back without the animal.

Went back down to look and I was worried because we were shooting ballistic tips and I figured there would be no exit and little or no blood trail. The animals ran up the bluff so we started up and found some blood spatters. His eyes lit up and he said "see, I hit it". I looked up the bluff and sighed "yeah"...

We had discussed blood trailing and he was game. Blood got better and about half way up he says "I don't think it's gonna die! Told him we would follow till the blood stopped or we found him. Thick cedars on that bluff elicited more than one or two choice word strings under my breath while the kid was out front. About 400 yards into it Gonzalo says "mr rusty, how are we gonna get him back"? I assured him we could drag him downhill. Kid has a pretty good thinker.

Blood started getting foamy and sure enough Gonzalo saw him laying up ahead. That's Gonzalo with his first kill. Three hours after shooting a gun for the first time.

They hunted a buck in a blind in the evening and didn't get a shot. They are sitting in a blind now looking for a buck. Cross your fingers and say some prayers for Gonzalo. The leukemia and aoudad slayer!

Helping a kid, in any way, at any time, is one of the most important things we can do in life. You, sir, have done a good deed.

My name is Denny Vasquez and I am a board member of the charity group, Texas Outdoor C.H.I. L.D.. For the last 16 years, we have been providing outdoor adventures to youngsters that have a terminal illnesses, are in remission from a terminal illness or have experienced a life altering medial event. I have a 10 year old young man from San Antonio that is in remission from ALS Leukemia that wants to go hunting. To the best of my knowledge this young man has never even shot a rifle before so it could be a challenging hunt. We have a group of ranches that we normally work with but since last year was a really busy year for us I don't want to abuse the privilege, so to speak, so I am looking for someone that might be willing to help us make this young man's dream come true. If you are willing to consider helping us out, either with a donation or a reduced cost hunt please call me at 281-384-2968 or email me at texan0718@yahoo.com. This does not have to be a huge trophy animal, just a representative of the species that can provide some meat for his family and a head that we can mount for him to put on his wall to remember the event by. You can see some of our past adventures on our face book page, https://www.facebook.com/Texas-Outdoor-CHILD-368221741732/…. The young lady at the top of the page is the reason that this young man wants to go hunting. She has lost her left leg to cancer and they know each other from the hospital where they were getting their treatments. He heard about her hunt the weekend of December 9th and now he wants to go see what it is all about. Thanks for considering our request. P.S. Every dime donated to us goes toward the youngsters as all of our staff is 100% volunteers.

Please drop us an email sometime, I know we are quite some distance away but we will be willing to help/assist in any way possible. What you are doing is admirable.
