I need a new GPS for hunting. Who makes the best model? What special features are available? Thanks

I'm currently shopping for one also and am looking pretty hard at the garmin 60 Series. Think the 64 is the newest version. Some of the older versions get better reviews and I know you can update the maps so that's one thing I've been looking at. IIRC I have seen great reviews on the 60csx but it is an older model. I am going to keep my eye on the new garmin 64st. From the guys I've talked to that do a lot of back country stuff, units with buttons are preferred over the touch screen models because the buttons always work in any weather conditions and the touch screen can be more finicky. There is a great comparison of some units with quite a bit of useful info, I just read through it the other day. Might help you decide.

I picked up the Garmin etrex touch 25 while on a Co elk hunt in 2015. Pretty budget friendly and easy to use. Borrowed a spare from one of the guys the first day and worked as long as you could see the sky, but if you were anywhere near the woods it would lose signal. Picked up the etrex and didn't have any issues with signal at all.

Garmin bought out Delorme. This year they just announced a combo inreach/map64 type unit.

Satellite text/sos feature combined with detailed garmin maps and charting.

Just looked this unit up...pretty amazing. Thanks for the heads up Bobo. That new inReach Explorer+ is looking like an incredible unit.

For sure. I love my inreach. The peace of mind is worth it. I run freedom plan with unlimited text in sept and move it down to basic rest of the year.

I've even ran it via tracking mode in my truck while I stayed in a hotel in case some one stole my truck. Pretty handy unit.

The new model garmin is putting out is a nice addition, if I didn't already have the inreach I would buy it tomorrow. I like Gaia on my phone but two options in the back country never hurts

I had a garmin 62. The 64 is a newer version of it.

You can lay tracks, and points of interest, on BaseCamp. It overlays your tracks and points onto google map for later use. Pretty cool to use seeing where youve gone on a property.
