Can you substitute 16-20% goat feed for more expensive deer feed..I know minerals are lacking in the goat feed..But can't you make up that in a mineral block..Goat feed half the price of deer protein

I don't know where you buy your "Goat Feed" and I do not know what brand of Deer protein you are comparing it to. But I have never seen it at half the cost.

I can't comment on the relative nutritional values, but I can definitively say that the deer eat it. My dads goat feeders used to attract deer like flies to a trashcan. They're also very fond of the supplement pellets my dad uses for his emu's.

I was just wondering where you can buy goat feed for half as much as those for deer. I feed "Beef Grower" to my Ibex. It is around $8 per sack.I mix L&E Exotic pellets with it. They are around $9 per bag.. I have a few Ibex kids I feed a mixture of that and purina Goat Chow". It is close to $20 per bag. I bought some cheap Sheep and goat pellets a while back and if memory serves me they were around $9 a sack. I am just wondering where I can get goat pellets for around say $6 a sack? I am not excited or anything just looking to save some money.

I looked up some prices.L&E "Pasture Goat" is $9.30 a bag. Purina Sheep and Goat is $12. Goat pellets from Tractor Supply is $13. I did not buy any Deer Protein pellets in 2016 but from L&E in 2015 they were around $11 a bag. And Purina Goat mineral is $15 for a 25# bag. And I forgot to add that I have been adding oats to the feed to give them extra selenium. I had a few of the Ibex that seemed to be a little weak in the lower foot joint and the oats has seemed to help.

Same here.. you would need to get a better quality goat feed to measure up to deer feed... even the cheaper noble goat feed I get is close to the same price as deer

Im sure prices will vary in different areas also... the copper, phosphors, calcium and im sure other requirements would be different between the two... ammonium chloride and sometimes Decoquinate is added to goat feed... how big of a toll this would have on freerange deer with plenty browse im not to sure but id rather not feed medicated feed either way imo..

Have fed a peletized goat feed a time or three when we stopped to pick up feed and they were out of deer protein. The stuff we used was recommended by the store owner whom we know. It was priced $1 a bag higher but he gave it to us at the same price because he was out. Have seen no ill or positive effects correlated to it.

In my humble opinion if you are committed to a protein supplement management program then consider the goat feed as you will no doubt be feeding lots of it, year round and the savings may be more than justified. If you are only going to feed offseason or during season and use more as attractant, I would feed the good stuff myself and not worry that it may be $1-2 more per bag. Again, just my opinion on the matter, take it as you may.

Wouldn't a protein program require year round feeding and then waiting about 6 years for yearlings to have fed on the protein for 6 years to reach their full potential?

That would be a year round protein program. Lots of people only feed for portions of the year when deer may need it more than others. Antler growing season, drought, post rut for recovery etc.

In my experience your not going to start feeding protein in a low fence natural environment and see a big difference night and day, you may never. I wish I knew what our difference would be from day one with/without feeding, but you cant have it both ways. I do know in drought years we still have healthy deer and experience a good amount of fawn recruitment still while others without a feeding program seem to suffer.

Well good buy even with employee discount from a friend I couldn't get under $10 a bag and that's been a few years back.
