Was out hunting in the forest and thought i heard a deer behind me sounded like a gallop come in fast and go away and then i could not hear it anymore. I was looking at the wind direction but i heard the deer behind me. This was some minutes after a fawn bleat call. Is this common for deer to circle downwind of you? I did not move or turn but the deer ran away. Bummer

Yes, especially a mature deer. Or he/she could have just been coming in from that direction.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I have seen this play out many times when calling (grunts, rattles), typically during the rut & always a buck that considers himself alpha. If you convince him there is another buck vying for his does he will almost away come directly to you. If he isn't convinced, he'll work the area from every angle while trying to catch wind of whatever is there. You will notice many times he'll have his mouth open as if he's panting, this helps improve his senses. Scientist say it improves their sense of smell. Nogalus is spot on...it was a wise old veteran. Both bucks and does react to bleats, so could have been either.

Almost anytime you grunt, bleat, or rattle the mature deer will approach from downwind and use their nose to see if the sound was legit or not especially if they have been grunted or rattled in before. This isn't always the case but I make sure I always watch the downwind area when trying to call deer in close.
