I will be hunting at Colorado Bend state park next week (1/16-18), never visited this park. Anyone have any recommendations or tips for success? Hoping for opportunity for nice exotic but not sure what animals may be present.

Check out this link from a past post: http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6558489/Re:_Colorado_bend_sp#Post6558489

I camped there about a month ago. Never hunted it though. LOTS of deer everywhere in the park. There are areas near the river that will probably be best, but spots up by the Gorman Falls are a little more open for better shots. You can't go wrong anywhere most likely. I never saw any exotics. Just a ton of whitetail. Good luck!

I am going to be hunting this same hunt. Take lots of corn. I applied for this hunt, not knowing that I was going to get on a lease southwest o San Saba. Was chosen for it, as well as the Guadalupe River State park hunt 1/9-1/13! Should have played the lottery, I suppose. I feel exotics Might BE RARE in the area, but don't quote me on that. Corn the area heavily, and wait. The park employees at Guadalupe River have been corning the hunting areas in their park, but i'm not sure if Colorado Bend does the same. Hope to see you there! Rob

I've done a few park hunts in the Hill CO. Railroad's advice is right. Scout out first to find a promising area with signs of good traffic, corn it heavy, keep the activity down, and wait for them to find it.

Good luck gents, please post up after and let us know how the hunts go.

I was lucky enough to hunt colorado bend last yr-
Saw several deer but never got a shot I was hunting down near the falls somewhat by the event center.

On the walk back to my truck a "herd" of 7 Auodad ran right in front of me through a clearing. I took a quick shot at one as it was running by and it continued to run.
I tracked the blood to a cliff near the river and decided to call the park rangers who helped me track the animal for 2 hrs. We hiked through the dense brush up and down the canyons (we even found some awesome caves) and saw glimpses of the auodad. Long story short we never recovered the animal which is disheartening, but the hospitality of the ranger coupled with the gorgeousness of the land made for one my most memorable hunts...

Last year there were only a few deer taken on this second Colorado bend hunt, but we heard quite a few shoots which I am guessing means people saw deer but did not hit them or did not recover them.

I am sure you will have a great time, Enjoy!

I'm hunting The Bend next Monday, also. Just returned home from anterless/spike hunt at Guadalupe S.P. I believe there were 6 axis killed through yesterday evening. I didn't hunt this morning. Are compartments drawn by hunters on the Bend hunt, or assigned? I know they say to bring your own blind on this hunt. Would they let you use a tailgate feeder to feed roads, or do you have to haul in all your corn, blinds and supplies by foot. Thanks, Rob V.

I will be hunting The Bend starting Monday also. I believe the hunt is by compartment but I am not sure if we draw for choice or if the compartments are assigned. As far as how the baiting can be applied, call and ask, I think they will let you know if a tailgate feeder would be feasible. I hope the weather doesn't make it a soggy hunt. My freezer is nearly empty of WT venison, its been a tough year. What WT doe lack in quantity is made up for in quality, so I hope to take at least one from this hunt. Axis would be a great bonus. I am not sure how Aoudad do as table fare but I won't pass up an opportunity. Just hoping for a safe, successful, enjoyable hunt and adventure!!

Thanks, hgood.I just got off the phone with the park, and was told that using a tailgate feeder would depend on which compartment that I hunted. If there is road in the compartment, then yes would be the answer. Good luck on your hunt next week. hopefully we will not get washed out. Rob

Forgot to mention that I was informed by someone on the Guadalupe river hunt. that the larger rams are "not that tasty", but a ewe would be better table fare. All that I have had was Aoudad sausage, and it was fair.

Just a report back regarding my doe/exotic hunt this week at Colorado Bend state park. Its was a tough hunt due to weather and time of year, but I was successful in harvesting a wt doe and an Aoudad ewe. Met some good people and had an enjoyable hunt. I am trying to include with this post a few of the over 400 pics I got on a game camera in one night at my blind location. There are a lot of animals at this park!!

I went out that same weekend in East Texas, but the full moon really messed us up.
