A good hunting buddy and myself made a quick morning trip to go out duck hunting this morning, with our local game warden. Our local game warden has been coming to our hunting camp often over the years, and we enjoy him coming out to visit and talk about hunting. We got to talking and we planned a quick trip for today. He was willing to help us and get set up correctly. He had all the decoys, calls, and best of all, a good dog. We were covered in ducks at first light, and had several ducks down within 30 minutes. Lots of ducks circling, would start to cup, and many would flare out and not commit to landing. For the warm temps this morning, we were able to get a total of 7. As always, we should have gotten more than that. I had been duck hunting several times through an outfitter, but this was our first time on our deer lease and on our 40+ acre lake. We had a blast! I'm now more excited to go duck hunting than deer hunting. I think the cooler temps would have been better for duck hunting, but we still had a great time. I have lots to learn about the different species of duck!!

Better watch it, Chad. You're going to have to start doing shotgun reloads if you aren't careful (and don't already do them)!
I hadn't hunted since my lab was put down 6 years ago. The duck hunting itch started up again last year and I scratched it real good this year. Getting a dog this Spring and hopefully it'll be ready to hunt by next winter.

That's awesome man. There is nothing wrong with using an outfitter but there is a sense of satisfaction doing it yourself. I also think at a certain point, at least personally, I learn more going out and doing it myself. My father is a guide and I have been going hunting with him for 20+ years. He has taught me a lot, but there are certain things I just learn or get better at when I go out without him.

The last thing I need is another press! Go another time or two and you'll be hooked to the point you shoot your shotgun almost as much as you do your rifle. I see a new press in your future. Guess your gonna need some of us to put in more ammo orders

If you are hunting with a seasoned Game Warden, you probably have one of the best teachers out there.

LOL! Well, there was one duck that the 3 of us shot at 3 times each, and we didn't know how we missed it. It ended up crashing into the side of a hill about 200-300 yards away, and we retrieved after the hunt. Yes, my wallet reminded me we were using steel shot!!
