Well when I sell my Ruger #1 and sako 85, I'm going to have my last custom rifle built.

Pierce Titanium action with LW bolt option, Proof Research Carbon Wrapped barrel, Jewell trigger, McMillan's new ultralight stock, yada yada

anyone run a Proof Research barrel, from what I've gathered over on the Longrange forums, they shoot very good, like REALLY good, just a ton of money.

This will give me my mid range hunting gun which doesn't weigh 10 pounds. 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08, still working on this one..

So Proof Research Barrels.....anybody??

Never read anything bad about them, I'm considering one myself at the moment. How much weight do you anticipate saving over a steel barrel?

Hmmm I see a mountain rifle build starting to take shape.

I shot a Nilgia with a Horizon built 28 Nosler with Proof Research barrel. I ran a few different test loads thru it and all shot well.

I am considering a short barrel Proof Research barreled 22 Creedmoor for a lightweight Coyote getter.

Check out Lone Peak Arms for a titanium action. The smiths I use tend to prefer that vs the Pierce.

Also, if going short, like 16" you can still thread a Bartlein 2B for suppressor use. About same weight as proof and probably better chance of accuracy.

Just from research on what I plan to do for a LW custom rifle. I bought a Kimber 84m in the meantime, under 5lbs for a 6.5CM threaded.

do you remember lead time on your Lone Peak action? I have looked at them and they are very impressive.

When I looked a month ago it was like two weeks as he had actions ready, just missing some small parts. Call him up and order directly.

I had one on a 264 win...it shot pretty good, nothing special...3/4 in gun...which is good...they are pretty costly though...

I personally wouldn't spend over double what a ss top tier barrel costs but it looks like you are going top tier components across the board. It should shoot great. Good luck with the build!

Buzz, out of the Top 100 PRS shooters in 2015, 43% used Bartlein bbls, 6% used Proof Research. P_102

Buzz, the Proof barrels I have shot all did well. I recently finished a build that was a 28 Nosler on a Proof barrel, and it shot same hole at 200 yards. It was a hammer, and the customer verified it shot that tight all the way out to 800 yards, as far as he shot it. What's not to like about a 195 grain EOL going 3000 fps shooting that accurate!

The main issue with carbon fiber barrels is the heat dissipation after a few rounds. After about 3-4 rounds, the carbon fiber radiates the heat off the barrel, and you see this as HEAVY mirage when looking through the scope. Your target becomes a distorted wave of mirage at that point. For a hunting rifle when you only shoot once or twice in the field, it's no problem. But it can become an issue at the range or when used as a target rifle.

The concept of getting a heavy contour, bull barrel but with the lighter weight of the smaller barrels is great. They do this very well, and keep the weight down on hunting rifles. But they are expensive.

It seems like the money doesn't matter, but if it did, a quality ss barrel properly fluted wouldn't be that much heavier and would save some $$$.

Thanks for all the great comments. Keeping in mind I'm going for 20" barreled rifle under 6lbs.

I have watched a tone of stuff on TI actions "galling" . This has been cured by nitride coating or Cerakote finish .

as far as barrels, nothing is off the table, a #2 contour Bartieln would probably "make weight"

Plus, I don't want to wait a year, I want it finished this summer for load development before deer season

This could be what I need to spin that dang spinner target at Jason's, my tiny .223 couldn't quite make it go round. banana

Buzz, you dont cerakote the inside of the action. Its the bolt they are coatinf, you just have to keep a good eye on the finish. It woukd be a good idea to find a smith comfortable and has experience with machining TI. They can make or break your build

I would love to put one of Proof's carbon wrapped barrels on a gun, but they are so expensive.

I have a best of the west with a proof in a 28 nosler. I did notice after several days getting in and out of metal stands and riding in the truck that the carbon was rubbed quite a bit after just one season. I'm super hard on gear and am wondering if a ss barrel would not be better for me in the long run!
