After sighting in my scope with monarch (edit145gr) fmj sp, i tried some silver bear 140gr, those 3 shots were low and left. That got me thinking that i need to shoot
1 grain, one tip, one brand. I'm mostly going to hunt hogs and deer out to around 200 yards. just wondering if y'all have one ammo that you shoot exclusively, or do y'all just adjust the scope every time you switch ammo for target and hunting?

I used to hunt when i was a kid, but have not have the chance to get back into it as an adult until now, so here i am asking noob questions.
I built an ar15, went hunting with it and quickly traded it for a bolt action 308 and a 9mm pistol. That ar was just too uncomfortable to shoulder.

I believe you meant 145gr FMJ, not 245gr. I think the Hornady AMAX is a very versatile round and it's what I decided to use as a single round for long range and hunting deer/hogs.

I'd recommend Federal Fusion. Inexpensive, and I've had great terminal performance in several calibers. Should more than cover everything you've listed.

Thanks LFD, there is such a huge selection and so much (cheap) ammo now. I'll give those 2 a look when i go for more ammo. I got 100 rnds with the trade but unfortunately, 60 of them were the silver bear

For deer and hogs, any 150-165 grain hunting ammo from a 308 will work great. No need for premium ammo unless you are hunting something much bigger. Always sight in with the ammo you are going to use. Ive seen poi t of impact change a lot using different ammo.

Good advice there.

Yesterday, the cheap russian ammo was about 2 inches low and left from the 3 center shots i got from the monarch ammo, i feel that could be the difference between a clean kill shot and following a blood trail. Since i Have so much of the russian ammo, I'll see how well it groups as I'm burning through it. I tried to upload a pic of the target, but i couldn't get it to work.

Mike

Get with Chad from Dallas Reloads (ChadTRG42 on here). I bought 5-7 rounds of a few different .308 bullets and found out the 168 A-Max shot the best out of my gun. Great guy to work with and you can buy the bullet that shoots the best from him.

Chad's 165 Sierra Gamekings work great for me. At 308 speeds, they really penetrate and put a hurtin' on anything I shoot

I tried those and the 150 NBT but the A-Max shot a crazy tight group.

Welcome to the forum!

I posted earlier that any 150-165 hunting bullet will work fine. If I didn't reload, I would try Federal Fusions first. I don't think you can get any better value in loaded ammunition with a bonded bullet.

Thank you for the reference, guys!!!

I have some good bulk ammo with the 168 and 178 A-max, and some high end match grade that I can load any bullet you want. The bulk ammo is made to be good ammo at a good price. It's not "match" grade per se, but it shoots good in most rifles. My match ammo has turned in some very tight groups and has extreme tight tolerances on the powder charge.

I have your page saved Chad, i have some buddy's that will be interested also.

I appreciate the response guys, I'm going to get a few different grained rounds of fusion to see what my rifle likes, i was told some rifles don't like heavy rounds and don't like light rounds. It groups 140 & 145 sub moa at 100 so, I'm wanting to see what 150 & 165 will do at 100 and on out to 200+ yards.

A pic of my first bolt action rifle, nothing fancy but it works just fine.

Mike, if your rifle likes a load, it likes the powder and powder charge used with that bullet. If your rifle dislikes a certain bullet, it does not like the powder and powder charge used with that bullet. I can get most any bullet to shoot well, if the bullet is properly stabilized, by tuning the load ( I.e. powder and powder charge) to the rifle. So it's kind of a wives tale if your rifle likes or dislikes a certain bullet weight, based solely on bullet weight.

150 grain Sierra Game Kings at moderate velocities have been deadly on hogs of all sizes in my .308. You don't have to get real fancy.

I like a 178 Amax but it isnt really considered a hunting bullet is it?

The 178 A-max works great as a hunting bullet. I had several guys use my bulk match ammo with the 178 A-max on elk this last season. They recovered several bullets under the skin on the far side. The bullets opened up perfectly, retained good weight, and made very quick kills. It would be a great option for anything in Texas, for sure.

It is cup and core bullet with a plastic tip that will behave very well at the velocities a 308 can push it. Like Chad said It works,

The A-Max would not be my choice from a 300 mag but from the 309 it will work nicely
