I always try to look in the crops of all quail I kill just to get an idea what they are eating. Today I found something I have never seen. Not sure if these are small worms that were ingested, or if they are parasites. Your thoughts?

With a screen name like pharmvet I'd be looking to you for answers.

Other than revolting, I got nothing.

I'm gonna research it once I get home. I've got a message and photo in to Dale Rollins as well.

Freeze them and save them for fishing season. Big ol bream would love that feast.

Maybe maggots. Quail love flies. We had a pet one when I was growing up. We had flies in the house before AC. You could pick up a fly swatter and the quail would go hunting with you.

Mealworms I think. He may have found a feeder on a place with bluebird feeders. I grow mealworms and supplement with freeze dried for feeding to eastern bluebird population. Maybe someone close to your hunting area does the same?

I have, on at least one occasion, found a quail with a ear plug in its craw....

Army worms. If you are hunting out west we have had a plague of them this year. Especially if the place you hunt has some winter crops like wheat. Our quail eat the fire out of them around here.

No reply from Dale as of yet. Haven't had much time to research it, as work jumped on me like a gorilla as soon as I got home from 3 days of playing hooky ! grin

They are definitely worms of some sort. I sent the photo to a biologist and he is asking if the worms appeared to be attached or loose as they appear in the photo?

Loose, fell out of crop easily when I turned it wrong side out. Definitely think they were ingested. One other bird contained a few but these were the only two all weekend.
