I currently do not have a 308 semi as I sold my last AR-10 a few years ago. Thinking of getting one of these again....I kinda like the fact that the FNAR is different than my other AR's and seems like a solid option for about the same price. But, I like the ability to customize the AR-10 and I can do most of it myself.

Looking for thoughts and opinions on the pros/cons of each from those with more experience than me.

Thanks guys.

I owned a FN-AR here are the cons:

the breakdown/teardown is ridiculous, twice as long as AR platform with screws and such involved.

the gun never really shot lights out with HUNTING bullets, I tried and tried and the only loads it liked were match bullets. I have the opinion it is chambered for that style of ammo...

the magazines are pricey

the top rail needed to be deburred and reseated with locktite

AR-10 pros:

cheaper on the whole and customizable and getting lighter (sub 9lbs isn't unheard of)

FN always reminds me of the Air Force sniper, George, that was on Top Shot.

I would check out the DPMS G2 Hunter lightweight and accurate. I will be replacing or adding one of these to my collection when I can afford it. I just got a new TIKKA T3 SS ultra light in 308 for Xmas, and it will be a long time before I can convince MAMA that I really need another 308 platform: (DPMS G2 LINKY)

I have been hunting the last 2 seasons in West Texas with a 16" DPMS with a heavy barrel ( Not Bull) mods are a trigger/grips nothing else and it is accurate & very lethal , shoots hunting ammo or Mil Ammo both with very little difference in accuracy - only use a 10 round clip( probably have 5-20 round clips that have never been pulled out of the wrapper. Scoped with the Nikon M308 4x16x42mm side focus with a built in 800yard BDC that is matched for AR & 308 caliber. you could ask for nothing more in a semi Auto hunting rifle .

EXCEPT: lose 2 pounds or more and it would be perfect & that's what the DPMS G2 has done

Accuracy wise the fn is good but like said earlier, take down is not quick or easy. Magazines are up there around $50 I believe. I look at it kinda like a mini14 or sks. Has its place but it's not that accurate compared to a good quality bolt gun or ar10. Realistic groups of about 2-3" if you do your part. Still kills but st the price point I would go after the ar10.

I recently sold my FNAR as in a couple of weeks ago. Honestly, I didn't like it. It was heavy, looked like a bastardization of a hunting rifle and a tactical rifle, and the magazines quite literally way a pound each - and are expensive.

My vote was and is for AR10. I have had several flavors my current variety is an Armalite AR10 DEF10 and I like it very much.

Second on the DPMS G2 series for what you are thinking about. They have done a nice job with the G2's...

If you've never handled an FNAR you need to. They suck. I've shot one a few times and it's probably the worst fitting / feeling rifle I've ever shot.

I've had 2 FNARs and both shot fine but the triggers are mushy and rifle is a challenge to tear down. I would definitely recommend the AR10 for the potential with so many good triggers and accessories.

Interesting topic. Ive got a new FNAR still in the plastic case and never been shot. It really isnt anything I need personally, so does anyone know what it is worth? I might consider a trade if anyone is interested. Thanks.

Have not shot the FNAR, but I will speak up for the 308AR. If you are a reloader make sure you get an adjustable gas block this platform tends to come way over gassed from the factory across the industry in DI's. Plus you can really tame a lot of the 308 this way JP makes a stud of a winner gas block. If weight is your game I'd suggest sticking with DI many of the piston designs are unreal heavy which for the hiking hunter can add up quickly. Also highly recommend a naked threaded barrel b/c most seem to come with a pinned and welded flash hider which precludes a lot of people from DIY removal(muzzle brake huge plus with the 308AR). If you don't hav ea brake you already love this can save you some time and money while experimenting. Great hog rifle not free of quirks since there is no industry standard from head to toe like the ar15 so research parts availability(DPMS style vs Armalite). Shot placement is more important than caliber in many respects, but after the first shot most of us can't count on our best accuracy once they start to run and that is where the 308 is a big bonus from my chair. Enjoy your shopping!

I'll be a dissenter and say I really like my FNAR. It's 8lbs, plenty accurate and has the ergonomics of a semi-auto shotgun I grew up on. Recoil is super mild and it's never had a FTF. The machinery is excellent, not like an AK or Mini-14. I put a SWFA 1-4 on mine and use it primarily for hogs.

Probably worth about or less than what you paid for it. Not alot of demand for them. Your only hope is that FN discontinues them and someone gets a hankering for one. Check out gunbroker to see what they're going for (not what they're listed for).

Whats funny is when I handed a FNAR to an older guy and he grabbed it like a rifle/shotgun with his shooting hand. It was awkward and funny at the same time. I handed him a true AR platform and there was no confusion, hand went straight to the grip. The hybrid setup is confusing and honestly not sure what FN was thinking.

I had a hard time getting accuracy out of the FNAR which I did not have with the FN PBR and especially did not have a problem with the FN SPR.

I had no idea a FNAR could be so confusing, it's a BAR with a pistol grip.

I can't be happier than I am with our Sig 716's, one is a Patrol, one is a Designated Marksman... both shoot lights out at 300... very straightforward, very reliable...

Personally, I'm not a fan of the FNAR, at all. They look like a cross between a BAR and a tactical shotgun. The FNAR's also don't have the spare/custom parts availability of the AR-10. I do however like AR-10's and their variants. I just built one for around a grand, that will shoot 1.5-2 inch groups at 300 yards, with inexpensive hunting ammo (Hornady American Whitetail). Mine is heavy though, but I don't mind.

The one I recently sold was used so no case. But it did have a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x42 Tactical scope. I lost money on it in order to sell to fund something else. I can't remember exactly what I sold it for but it was like $750.

Ive been on a challenging search for the "ultimate hog weapon" as we have a bad hog problem. I am pretty much resolved that I need a semi auto for best follow-up shot accuracy. I have witnessed hogs shot with a .308 that do not drop right there and although there is blood- never found. But, im now wondering if I might keep this FNAR as my primary hog eradication device. Any thoughts? Other options would be AR-10 in 6.5CM or .338 Federal maybe..???

I'd stay with 308 and just experiment with different bullets. But I'd get rid of the FNAR turd for an AR10.

The answer is always to get a new rifle.
