after the "season" do you separate barreled action from stock for thorough cleaning?

What do you torque them back together at? foot lbs.?

I don't separate the stock from the action unless the rifle got soaked or had some sort of solvent dribble down under the barrel.

As for torque settings, (and I may be reversed on this) most wood stocks are torqued around 35-50 pounds - nearer the lower end of that scale- while synthetic stocks are torqued 45-60. Depends upon the make-up of the synthetic an, of course, manufacturer's recommendations.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

Only after west Texas, or west Oklahoma shooting, in the wind, with the fine sand do I take out the barreled action. Probably should more often.

I don't have any wood stock bolt actions, so 65 in/lbs is what the action screws get torqued to.

I guess i'm so anal, i'm scared i'll screw something up if I separate my mcwhorter. I gave it it's end of season cleaning this morning, stripped bolt to clean firing pin, no problems,

I will and I'm gonna dump my cheapo HS stock for something a little nicer. I'm like you though Buzz, it shoots so dang good I'm almost scared to change things up.

The season is 365 days a year. There is always something that needs killed. I shoot a lot more things when its not deer season.

Same. My creedmoor has been boss hoggin the action though. Time to switch things up. Just got a stamp back for a 7mm08 SBR and got my 16.25" 308 back from the lathe. Should have my stamp back soon for the WC 6.8 also.

Yes, pull the barreled action from the stock, especially to give the trigger a good cleaning. Blasting it with gun scrubber is a definite must do. If the rifle has a Jewell trigger, clean it every time after being in sandy or dusty conditions.

I will run a lubed patch between the stock and barrel to help prevent rust, but have never worried about separating barreled action and stock. Have several rifles that are older than I am that have never been separated and appear to look/function fine.

I have a Mcwhorter as well, and never have had the need to separate for good cleaning. I do not even clean the barrel much until accuracy starts to diminish, around 300 rds or so.
