I recently put this build together and got it functioning well, put a Sightmark PhotonXT (6.5x) on top and hit the range on our lease.

Ahead of the hunt I spent about 4 hours shooting various guns and zeroing the Bushmaster, I believe I stopped shooting at about 510pm and this guy came to the feeder right about 630pm. My scent was all over the place as I was placing targets and not really counting on setting in the blind for too long.

Well before getting ready to wrap it up and head to the field I spy this hog, I quickly flicked on the recorder and got into a shooting position. Ordinarily I watch the animal for a short duration before taking the shot but with my scent being heavy in the area and the hog being on the outside of the pen I convinced myself to shoot - SHOOT NOW.

Oh what a goof for the first blood on this rifle.

I watched as the hog took the shot and ran away and just sort of shook my head in silence.

Big Bore - THUMPER - you know the drill right - 250 grains of gilding metal flying through the air is going to knock them off their feet. Body parts will not stand a chance of remaining intact...

Well - a follow up shot was made it didn't connect and I didn't see any other hogs the remainder of the night so the next morning I thawed out (heater didn't work for me in camp) and took to the trail. Looked good, heck even I was able to find the body.

He ran through some trails and zig zagged and came to rest about 50 yards away.

I did a brief necropsy, I avoided the organs as I poked around so unsure on lungs / heart condition.

You'll see in the video that the recovered bullet is picture perfect - but I'm still baffled by his ability to run and not at least be blown over by the impact.

Don't get me wrong I'm happy to have recovered the hog after placing such a poor shot but I will be monitoring future hog reactions to this bullet (handload) and update here as I can (if the recorder and hunter cooperate).

Well, the shot wasn't great, but the hog died in a reasonable distance. You got good expansion. So in those regards, all was good.

So no overpenetration. Some would argue that was good because the bullet expended all the energy in the target, but the damage wasn't extensive, much like it was at a lower velocity. Any idea of velocity?

Velocity of this load was 2251 FPS, I might have had the chrono at 7 feet instead of 10 feet so I really should redo that test.

The factory loads are 250 gr FTX bullets at 2200 FPS but that bullet is designed to explode.

You can attest to the GMX behaving differently from your trials in Grendel ammo, I have a feeling I am seeing some of that with 450b....

At this point it is a sample of 1 so I am not jumping to conclusions BUT yes I am a bit disheartened because I was hoping to line up some double kills - if the bullet can't make it through 1 hog then....

Interesting. At that velocity, I would have expected overpenetration of a bullet that heavy that apparently stayed together very well.

That is the fun of testing. Looking forward to more results.

That's odd. I would have expected a passthrough. I have shot numerous with 45LC and 45-70, at much slower speeds. I have yet to recover a bullet. I remember one 170-180 pounder that took a 255g LRNF from a 45LC just under the left eye and the exit was near the scrotum. Approx 3' of penetration. That round was traveling about 900 fps. 3 nilgai have been passthrough's with 325 gr FTX. I'm interested to see a larger sample size. Go kill some more.

Yep, you would of thought that bullet would of blew the other side off that pig. The bullet did what it was suppose to do.

This hog waited until dark to come out

I'd say over the last 3 years hunting on our lease I've seen 1 hog during the day - he won't make that mistake ever again though rifle

I paid for a hunt on a high fence game ranch down near San Antonio, they had a lot of pigs that came out during the day - I took 4 out of the mix for them. I attribute their daytime movement to the high fence - once you have them locked inside it isn't like they have anywhere to go and hogs gotta eat so the probablity is higher in that situation.

If you want to see more during the day, you can't try a couple of things: baiting or calling or if you're a good horseman go on horseback. I tried calling saturday afternoon and it was awesome. I watched the video from double naught spy and i had to give it a try myself. I synced my cell to a bluetooth speaker and called multiple groups outta creek bottoms. But hogs are naturally nocturnal so its really up to them what they want to do. Now my opinion on the rifle/scope.... FREAKING AWESOME, definitely a fan of large calibers, maybe play around with different projectiles and loads until you find the sledgehammer that works best.

I, like most others, would have expected that bullet to pass completely through.

Clearly you need to collect more data. Go out and shoot some more hogs.

Take photos and let us know how it goes. We'll be here …

Nice video and good shooting. On the comment above, that's what happens on TV. It was explained to me once, and it was over my head, but the gist is... the recoil energy of the firearm is the same impact energy felt. The bullet energy that enters the soft tissue is the energy that transfers or dissipates it's energy into the body. It's 2 different energies. This is why deer and other animals don't get blown over or go flying when struck.
